On Monday, Akyem Oda witnessed a major campaign push by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as two former Finance Ministers, Yaw Osafo-Maafo and Ken Ofori-Atta, led a high-profile visit to rally support for the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and parliamentary candidate, Alexander Akwasi Acquah. The visit, aimed at ensuring a resounding victory for Dr. Bawumia and Mr. Acquah in the upcoming elections, was part of the NPP’s strategy to solidify its hold on the Akyem Oda constituency, which has long been an NPP stronghold.

In addition to the two former Finance Ministers, the campaign team included the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Birim Central, Joyce Adjoa Agyeiwaa, as well as key party executives in the constituency, led by Kwadwo Amparbeng Assimeng, the constituency chairman. The primary goal of the visit was to energize voters, urging them to cast their votes overwhelmingly in favor of Dr. Bawumia to ensure that the NPP government’s achievements would continue.

The campaign team made several stops across the constituency, visiting key areas such as the Kumasi Station and the Oda Timber markets, where they interacted with traders and the local community. The focus of the visits was to highlight the numerous developmental projects spearheaded by the NPP government, and to encourage voters to back Dr. Bawumia to carry on these initiatives.

Mr. Osafo-Maafo, who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area in the past, used the opportunity to urge the electorate to vote early on December 7, 2024, emphasizing the importance of getting to the polls before attending to any other matters for the day. He encouraged voters to cast their ballots for Dr. Bawumia and Mr. Acquah, stressing that a high turnout of early voters would be critical for the NPP’s success in the constituency and the nation at large.

Osafo-Maafo also raised concerns about local economic issues, particularly unemployment among the youth, and called on the government to consider establishing an industrial village in Oda. He explained that such a development would create job opportunities and help address the growing unemployment issue, which is a major challenge for the youth in the region. Additionally, he acknowledged the challenges faced by traders, particularly those in the timber market, assuring them that these issues would be resolved if Dr. Bawumia were to assume the presidency.

Ken Ofori-Atta, the former Finance Minister, took the opportunity to outline the numerous development projects that have been undertaken by the current administration, under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. He highlighted key infrastructure developments such as the construction of roads, hospitals, clinics, and schools, many of which were unprecedented in the country’s history. Ofori-Atta pointed out that these projects have not only transformed the country’s infrastructure but also created jobs and improved the living standards of Ghanaians across the nation, particularly in rural areas like Akyem Oda.

Ofori-Atta stressed that these remarkable achievements should not be overlooked or overshadowed by political rhetoric. He emphasized that the NPP government’s focus on infrastructure development had significantly contributed to the economic growth and prosperity of the country. By continuing to support Dr. Bawumia, he argued, voters would be ensuring that these initiatives would continue, and even accelerate, under his leadership.

The visit also saw Mr. Acquah, the NPP parliamentary candidate for the constituency, make a direct appeal to voters. He asked them to help him achieve an ambitious target of securing 90% of the presidential votes for Dr. Bawumia in the December elections. Acquah expressed confidence that the electorate, particularly in Akyem Oda, would deliver a resounding victory for Dr. Bawumia, given the numerous development initiatives initiated by the NPP government.

The call for 90% support was echoed by William Kufuor, the Chairman of the Oda Timber Market Association, who assured the visiting dignitaries that local traders would actively participate in the campaign to ensure Dr. Bawumia’s victory and Mr. Acquah’s re-election. Kufuor highlighted the importance of the industrial village proposal and promised to intensify efforts in getting more people to vote for the NPP in the upcoming election.

As the NPP gears up for the December 2024 elections, the party’s strong campaign push in Akyem Oda reflects its determination to retain its dominance in the region and ensure that Dr. Bawumia secures a significant win. With the backing of influential political figures like Osafo-Maafo, Ofori-Atta, and Acquah, as well as the enthusiastic support of local traders and party executives, the NPP is confident that it will achieve a major victory in the constituency. The party is also hopeful that Dr. Bawumia’s leadership will continue to bring transformative development to the region and the country at large, reinforcing the NPP’s position as the party of progress and growth in Ghana.
