"13-Year-Old Melchizedek Makes History as One of KNUST’s Youngest Students"

At just 13 years old, Melchizedek Adio Baafawiise has achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming one of the youngest students to enter the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). His exceptional academic prowess, which earned him A1 grades in five subjects—including challenging ones like Physics and Mathematics—in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), set the stage for his decision to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Physics at KNUST. This achievement is a testament to his extraordinary intelligence and passion for learning, making his entrance into university seem almost inevitable.

Melchizedek’s fascination with Physics is evident in his academic journey. Although he finds all aspects of the subject intriguing, it is Mechanics that truly captivates him. The hands-on nature of Mechanics, with its focus on calculations and experiments that make abstract concepts more tangible, resonates deeply with him. In contrast, he finds areas like Electricity and Magnetism less engaging, as the abstract nature of these topics—where phenomena like the movement of electrons are not directly visible—makes them harder for him to connect with. “I love the calculations and the mechanics. When you perform experiments, you get to feel them. Even though with electricity, you perform experiments, you don’t see the electrons moving,” he explained.

Born into a family that values education, with his father being an Economics teacher and his mother a primary school teacher, Melchizedek grew up surrounded by academic influence. Initially, he aspired to become a pilot, inspired by a fascination with aviation. However, as he learned more about the limitations and challenges associated with pursuing a career in aviation, he shifted his focus to Physics. This change was not a rejection of his earlier dreams but rather a way for him to explore his interests further. “If I study Physics, I’ll get to discover my true interest. By my third or fourth year, I’ll decide whether to specialize in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering,” he explained. His decision reflects a thoughtful approach to his future, where he can continue exploring his passion for science while keeping the door open to the possibility of revisiting his dream of flying.

Melchizedek’s educational path has been anything but typical. He attended St. Cyprian’s Minor Seminary, where he skipped both Forms 2 and 3, advancing more quickly than many of his peers. Initially, this rapid progression left him feeling a bit intimidated when he transitioned to the university. However, his adjustment to this new and challenging environment was swift. Now, Melchizedek feels entirely comfortable among his older peers at KNUST. Reflecting on his experience, he noted, “It doesn’t seem like much of a difference. It’s just normal.” This comment speaks volumes about his maturity and ability to adapt, suggesting that the challenges of being one of the youngest students in a university setting are not holding him back.
