Reindorf Twumasi Ankrah Named Acting CEO of GIADEC

President John Mahama has appointed Reindorf Twumasi Ankrah as the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC), a key body tasked with driving the development of Ghana’s aluminium industry. This appointment comes at a crucial time as the country seeks to strengthen its position in the global aluminium market and pursue its ambitious Integrated Aluminium Industry (IAI) agenda.
GIADEC, established under the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation Act, 2018 (Act 976), is responsible for developing and promoting a competitive and sustainable aluminium industry in Ghana. The corporation is also tasked with managing the government’s investments in the aluminium sector, which include shares in significant entities such as the Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO) and the Ghana Bauxite Company Limited (GBC). With a focus on fostering a vibrant and competitive industry, GIADEC plays a key role in attracting strategic investors and ensuring local participation across the entire aluminium value chain, which includes mining, refining, and smelting.
In line with its mandate, GIADEC requires that any new ventures in the mining, refinery, or smelting sectors should have at least 30% of their shares held jointly by the corporation and a Ghanaian private partner. This ensures that Ghanaian interests are represented in every new development within the aluminium sector. The IAI initiative, which is a cornerstone of GIADEC’s mission, involves four major projects, including the expansion of two existing operations and the establishment of two new ventures through joint ventures. This initiative is expected to significantly contribute to the growth of the sector and provide an avenue for greater local involvement in the aluminium industry.
Reindorf Twumasi Ankrah, a highly accomplished lawyer, has taken over the leadership of GIADEC at a time when the corporation is poised for significant growth. With a wealth of experience in multiple legal fields, Ankrah brings a broad skill set that will be valuable in navigating the complexities of the aluminium sector. His areas of expertise include the extractive industry, corporate and commercial law, dispute resolution, medical negligence, family law, and criminal defence. Ankrah holds an LLM in Energy Law, an LLB, and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Sociology, all from the University of Ghana. His academic background and professional experience make him well-suited to lead GIADEC in the pursuit of its goals.
Currently serving as a partner at Morrison, Twumasi & Partners, Ankrah heads the firm’s dispute resolution and litigation division. Throughout his career, he has provided legal advisory services on investment analysis, energy and mining policies, legal risk management, and regulatory compliance. His expertise has also extended to supporting clients with project financing, debt restructuring, and obtaining necessary regulatory approvals. These skills and experiences will be essential as GIADEC moves forward with its strategic plans to transform Ghana’s aluminium industry.
Ankrah’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for GIADEC, as the corporation is tasked with overseeing the expansion of the country’s aluminium sector and working towards the full realization of the IAI initiative. Under his leadership, GIADEC is expected to strengthen its partnerships with key stakeholders in the mining and aluminium industries, both locally and internationally. This is crucial for ensuring that Ghana maximizes the potential of its bauxite and aluminium resources, which are key to the country’s economic development.
As Acting CEO of GIADEC, Ankrah is expected to provide strong leadership in navigating the challenges facing the aluminium sector and in driving the corporation’s ambitious plans for growth and development. His legal expertise, coupled with his strategic vision, will play a critical role in achieving the government’s long-term goals for the aluminium industry, while also ensuring that Ghana’s local interests are safeguarded. With Ankrah at the helm, GIADEC is poised to make significant strides in transforming Ghana into a competitive player in the global aluminium market.
