Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin recently visited former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, following an unsettling raid at his residence by operatives from the National Security Secretariat. The raid, which has ignited widespread concern and criticism, allegedly involved Richard Jakpa, the Director of Special Operations at National Security, and is being viewed as part of a troubling series of similar operations targeting high-profile individuals.

On the morning of Wednesday, March 19, 2025, a group of armed operatives, believed to be from the National Security Secretariat, reportedly stormed Dr. Addison’s residence in Roman Ridge, Accra. The operation took place at around 5 a.m. when Dr. Addison was at home. Approximately 15 heavily armed soldiers, arriving in three vehicles, entered the premises with rifles in hand and immediately began their search. The operatives reportedly disabled the security cameras before demanding that Dr. Addison lead them to what they claimed were “vaults” concealed in his house.

Dr. Addison, however, denied the presence of any hidden vaults or large sums of money on the property. Despite his denials, the operatives continued their search, ransacking the home and leaving the property in disarray. After finding no evidence of any hidden valuables, the security personnel reportedly called in National Security drivers to seize four of Dr. Addison’s vehicles. The operatives left only two of the cars behind, and they also confiscated the CCTV monitor and control unit, further deepening the sense of intrusion and violation felt by Dr. Addison and his family.

Later that same day, the Addison family was informed that the seized vehicles had been moved and were now parked across from Jokers Club in Labadi. The family was instructed to retrieve the vehicles, marking a bizarre and distressing turn in an already troubling situation. The raid has left Dr. Addison and his family shaken, as they process the violation of their private space and the unsettling nature of the entire operation.

This raid is part of a disturbing pattern of actions involving high-ranking officials. Just a month earlier, a similar incident occurred at the residence of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta. On February 11, 2025, a group of 12 individuals, including nine military personnel and three plainclothes officers, entered Ofori-Atta’s home without prior notice or a search warrant while the former minister was abroad for medical treatment. The intrusion, which took place in the early hours of the morning, caused significant distress to Ofori-Atta’s household staff, who were left in a state of shock.

For Ofori-Atta, the raid caused damage to both his reputation and the peace of mind of those within his household. He expressed his concern about the way the incident had negatively affected the people who worked in his home, leaving them feeling vulnerable and unsettled. Additionally, Ofori-Atta criticized the manner in which the raid was carried out, raising questions about the legality and necessity of such operations. The incident has sparked public debate about the role of National Security in the lives of private citizens and the degree to which government agencies can engage in such intrusions without proper oversight or justification.

Both the raid on Dr. Addison’s residence and the earlier incident at Ofori-Atta’s home have prompted questions about the reach and authority of National Security forces. Critics argue that these actions represent a worrying trend of governmental overreach and a disregard for the privacy and rights of individuals. The public outcry surrounding these raids is likely to continue as more details emerge about the motives behind these actions and the broader implications they have for political and personal freedoms in Ghana.

In the wake of the raid, Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin’s visit to Dr. Addison underscores the growing concern within the opposition regarding the state of affairs within the country. Afenyo-Markin has expressed his support for the former BoG Governor and his disapproval of the manner in which these raids are being conducted, calling for a transparent investigation into the matter. The political climate in Ghana appears to be increasingly fraught, with growing calls for accountability and a reassessment of the government’s methods of handling dissenting voices or individuals perceived as threats.

As the fallout from these raids continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to the growing pressure for transparency and accountability in its actions. The attacks on high-profile individuals, without clear legal justification, have created a tense atmosphere that many fear could have far-reaching consequences for Ghana’s democratic principles and the trust between the government and its citizens.
