Government Confirms Jane Opoku-Agyemang is in Good Health

The Government of Ghana has moved to calm growing public anxiety surrounding the health of Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, assuring the nation that she is in stable condition and making steady progress in her recovery.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, issued the reassurance during a radio interview on Joy FM on Sunday, May 5. He confirmed that the Vice President is in good spirits and under the attentive care of medical professionals in the United Kingdom.
“There is absolutely no cause for alarm. I can confirm that the Vice President is well and receiving the best medical attention. She is doing fine,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu stated, adding that her medical team will authorize her return to Ghana once they are satisfied with her progress. “As and when they think she’s fit to travel, the necessary steps will be taken.”
The update follows weeks of public speculation triggered by her absence from official duties and her reported travel abroad for medical reasons. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, who assumed office as Ghana’s first female Vice President in January 2025, was said to have taken ill on Friday, March 28. She was admitted to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) for initial treatment the following day.
After a thorough medical evaluation, health experts at UGMC recommended that the Vice President seek further treatment outside the country as a precautionary step to ensure a full recovery. Based on this advice, she departed Ghana in early April to continue care at a specialized facility in the United Kingdom.
In line with medical guidance, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang formally began a three-week medical leave on April 7, 2025. Government sources emphasized that the decision to seek treatment abroad was not due to a critical emergency, but rather a precautionary measure intended to provide the Vice President with the best possible environment for rest and recuperation.
President John Dramani Mahama also addressed public concerns during a public appearance on April 24, offering his own update and words of encouragement regarding the Vice President’s condition.
“Jane is in high spirits and recovering well,” the President said. “I spoke to her just yesterday and passed on the greetings of all gathered here. She sends her regards and expressed how much she would have loved to be present at this event, which is very close to her heart.”
The Vice President’s absence from recent national engagements had fueled speculation on social media and among sections of the public. However, the combined reassurances from both the Presidency and the Ministry of Government Communications appear aimed at dispelling rumors and bringing clarity to the situation.
Government has also stressed its commitment to keeping the public informed about the Vice President’s health and return timeline, while also urging citizens to respect her privacy during this time of recovery.
Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, a respected academic and former Minister for Education, broke new ground as the first woman to serve as Ghana’s Vice President. She has been widely recognized for her leadership style, intellect, and calm demeanor. Her brief absence has been notably felt within both the government and broader public life.
In the meantime, the Presidency assures that all state functions remain unaffected, and the business of governance continues smoothly in her absence.
As Ghanaians continue to send well wishes and prayers for her swift return, the message from government remains clear: the Vice President is doing well, receiving appropriate care, and will return when fully cleared by her doctors.
