AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine has deepened its investment in education by donating more than GH¢732,000 to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Obuasi campus. The donation is aimed at expanding and improving the university’s infrastructure to accommodate its growing student population.

The amount—GH¢732,309.40—is part of AGA’s broader commitment to educational development in its host communities. This latest support is intended to help alleviate infrastructural constraints at the campus, which has seen a steady increase in enrollment since its establishment.

The donation builds on AGA’s previous contributions to the university, including the handover of its former North Mine offices for the creation of the KNUST Obuasi campus. In total, the company has now invested over GH¢2.5 million in the campus project.

Speaking during the presentation ceremony, AGA Obuasi Mine’s Human Resource Director, Mr. Meshack Baah, emphasized the company’s long-standing focus on using education as a tool for community upliftment and national progress.

“This donation reflects our ongoing dedication to the development of the Obuasi community, especially through education,” he said. “We recognize the challenges facing the campus due to its rapid growth, and we want to play a role in easing those burdens and supporting the students’ academic journey.”

Mr. Baah also highlighted that AngloGold Ashanti sees education as one of the most impactful ways to drive long-term change in the communities where it operates. The company’s social investment strategy places education at the heart of its community development efforts.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the university, the Coordinating Dean of KNUST Obuasi Campus, Professor Lawrence Darkwah, expressed heartfelt appreciation to AngloGold Ashanti for its unwavering support.

“Our student population continues to rise, and this has created significant pressure on our existing infrastructure,” Prof. Darkwah noted. “This donation could not have come at a better time. It will go a long way in addressing key infrastructure challenges on campus.”

He further acknowledged AGA’s pivotal role in the establishment and growth of the Obuasi campus, stressing that the mining company has been a reliable partner from the beginning. He also used the opportunity to appeal to other stakeholders in the private sector to emulate AGA’s example and contribute to the campus’s development.

“AngloGold Ashanti has consistently shown a strong commitment to the growth of this university campus. We hope other institutions will come on board so we can collectively meet the demands of our expanding academic community,” he said.

Since the launch of the KNUST Obuasi campus, AngloGold Ashanti has been instrumental in its progress. From providing facilities to ongoing financial support, the company’s involvement has enabled the campus to grow steadily and offer better services to students.

With this new financial injection, KNUST Obuasi is expected to carry out essential infrastructure upgrades that will enhance learning and create a more conducive academic environment. The funding will help the university better respond to the needs of students, staff, and the wider Obuasi community.

As student numbers continue to climb, the partnership between AngloGold Ashanti and KNUST remains a shining example of how private-sector support can play a transformative role in the education sector.
