Family Confronts Suspect’s Lawyer After Court Postpones Immigration Officer Murder Trial

Court 2

A tense and chaotic scene unfolded outside the Adabraka District Court in Accra on Friday after proceedings in the murder trial of immigration officer Stephen King Amoah were adjourned. The second accused, Thomas Zigah, appeared in court amid heightened emotions, with the family of the deceased later confronting the suspect’s defense lawyer in a dramatic altercation.

During the session, the defense counsel requested that the court allow Mr. Zigah to receive medical treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital instead of the Police Hospital. The lawyer expressed concerns about the suspect’s deteriorating health while in custody at the Railway Police Station, highlighting symptoms such as red eyes and the need for specialized care. This request was made on humanitarian grounds, emphasizing the urgency of medical attention.

The prosecution opposed the request, arguing that the accused had already been examined and treated twice at the Police Hospital and discharged afterward. They further noted that the defense had not provided formal reasons to justify transferring the suspect to Korle Bu, a major teaching hospital. The prosecution maintained that the Police Hospital was adequately equipped to handle the suspect’s medical needs.

After hearing both parties, the court ruled that any change of medical facility would require a formal application with documented reasons. Consequently, the request to transfer Mr. Zigah to Korle Bu was denied.

Additionally, the defense sought a one-week adjournment, citing the prosecution’s indication that the accused would undergo a third medical examination at the Police Hospital. The defense argued that this would allow time to obtain a medical report, which could be critical evidence in the case.

However, the prosecution resisted the adjournment, explaining that investigations were ongoing in multiple jurisdictions beyond Accra, requiring officers to travel for further inquiries. They asserted that concluding the investigation within a week was not feasible. Taking these factors into account, the court rejected the adjournment request and adjourned the case until September 4, 2025.

The adjournment announcement triggered an emotional response from the family of the deceased, who had been waiting anxiously outside the courtroom throughout the day. Frustrated by the delay in justice and the seemingly prolonged legal process, the family members confronted the defense lawyer as he attempted to leave the premises.

The situation quickly escalated as the grieving family expressed their anger and sorrow directly to the defense counsel. Some family members attempted to physically accost the lawyer, leading to a chaotic scene that required immediate intervention from the police officers stationed at the court.

To prevent further violence, the police quickly moved to protect the defense lawyer, escorting him back into the courtroom for his safety. Later, he was accompanied to his vehicle under strict police security to avoid additional confrontation.

This tense encounter highlighted the deep emotions and frustrations surrounding the case, which has drawn significant public attention since the untimely death of Stephen King Amoah. The immigration officer’s murder has sparked calls for swift justice and thorough investigation.

As the legal process continues, investigators remain committed to uncovering all the facts and ensuring those responsible are held accountable. The court’s decision to adjourn the trial to early September allows time for further inquiries and preparation by both prosecution and defense.

Meanwhile, the grieving family and the public continue to await justice, with emotions running high as the case unfolds. The confrontation outside the court serves as a reminder of the human cost behind the legal proceedings and the urgent need for closure in this tragic case.
