The town of Effiduase in Koforidua has been cloaked in sorrow, its heart broken by the devastating loss of one of its most cherished sons — Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Ghana’s Minister for Defence.

News of his tragic death in a military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday sent shockwaves across the Eastern Region. But nowhere was the grief more deeply felt than in Effiduase, where he was born, raised, and remained deeply loved.

From the moment the news broke, crowds began to gather at the Boamah family residence in Effiduase — not out of curiosity, but out of love, heartbreak, and shared loss. Mourners from all walks of life — friends, neighbours, party loyalists, and ordinary citizens — came together, not just to grieve, but to honour a man they described as gentle, generous, and deeply committed to his people.

“He was more than a minister — he was a brother to us all,” said Collins Agyapong, a long-time resident of Effiduase. Fighting back tears, he described Dr. Boamah as a God-fearing man who touched countless lives through quiet acts of kindness. “He gave freely, listened with his heart, and served with humility. Losing him like this… it’s just unbearable.”

Among those who visited the family home were senior members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by Eastern Regional First Vice Chairman Ransford Owusu-Boakye. Grief brought political lines and social divisions to a halt — in that moment, everyone was simply a mourner, united in loss.

Later, a high-level government delegation, led by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, arrived to formally inform Dr. Boamah’s mother, Madam Leticia Omane Boamah, of her son’s passing. She received the news in the embrace of loved ones, her sorrow echoing through the walls of a home once filled with pride and laughter.

The wailing of heartbroken family members, the quiet sobs of neighbours, the sea of mourners in red and black — all bore witness to the gravity of this loss. Ghana has lost a leader. Effiduase has lost a son. And a family has lost its rock.

Dr. Omane Boamah leaves behind a grieving wife, Rita, and three young children — two daughters and a son — whose lives will forever bear the weight of this tragedy.

Yet even in this time of profound sadness, his legacy of service, compassion, and dedication continues to shine. Effiduase will never forget the man who rose from its soil to serve a nation — and who never forgot where he came from.
