Afua Asantewaa Sets New Guinness World Record with 121-Hour Singing Marathon

Ghanaian media personality Afua Asantewaa O. Aduonum has successfully completed her second attempt to set a Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest singing marathon by an individual. She achieved an impressive 121 hours and 39 minutes of continuous singing, surpassing her previous attempt and showcasing her extraordinary endurance.
The marathon took place at Heroes’ Park at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, Ghana. Beginning at dawn on December 21, 2024, the event lasted for five consecutive days, concluding on December 25, 2024. During this time, Afua Asantewaa performed a wide variety of over 200 songs that highlighted the richness of Ghanaian music. Her setlist included popular genres such as gospel, highlife, afrobeat, and hiplife, making her performance a true celebration of the country’s vibrant music scene.
Reflecting on the experience, Afua Asantewaa expressed immense satisfaction with her accomplishment. “I want to again say I am fulfilled; considering the fact that I succeeded in promoting Ghanaian songs,” she remarked. She was particularly proud of her role in showcasing the country’s musical talent and cultural diversity on an international stage. Her efforts have received widespread praise for not only breaking a world record but also for putting Ghanaian music in the spotlight.
Afua Asantewaa also took time to acknowledge the hard work of her team, whose support played a crucial role in making the event a success. “Of course, my team comprising Gladys Osei Owiredu (manager), Kofi Owusu Aduonum (husband and Head of PR), Fredrick Fosu, Kelvin Abban (Creatives), and Isaac Amponsah (Operations),” she said. Their dedication was essential in helping her maintain the stamina required for such a grueling event.
This record-breaking attempt marked Afua Asantewaa’s second endeavor at securing the Guinness World Record. Her first attempt, which took place in 2023, saw her sing for 126 hours. However, this attempt did not meet the criteria to break the existing record of 105 hours, held by India’s Sunil Waghmare. Despite the disappointment, Afua Asantewaa’s resolve was unwavering, and she returned with renewed determination for this year’s attempt. Her persistence and dedication to her craft were evident throughout the five-day marathon.
Looking ahead, Afua Asantewaa and her team will now submit all necessary documentation and evidence to Guinness World Records for official evaluation. The organization will thoroughly review the materials to determine if this latest attempt qualifies for the prestigious world record. Afua Asantewaa’s optimism remains high as she hopes that this achievement will finally be recognized officially.
The event garnered support from various sponsors, reflecting the community’s backing for her ambitious goal. Some of the notable sponsors included Ike’s Café & Grill, Nasco Electronics, Anointed Engineering Services, Ike City Group, Zoomlion, Perla Natural Water, the National Sports Authority (Kumasi), and the National Ambulance Service (Ashanti Region). Other supporters included 5 Star Energy Drink, Ghana Gas, Dzata Cement, Angel Group, Kofikrom Pharmacy, Aqua Tabs, Spot Stroke Fast Foundation, and Jollof King, Kumasi. Their contributions were vital in ensuring the smooth operation of the event, which was marred by the physical challenges of such a lengthy performance.
Afua Asantewaa’s determination and cultural pride have captured the attention of many, making her a prominent figure in Ghana’s entertainment industry. Not only did she aim for a world record, but she also used this platform to promote Ghanaian music, making her achievement a cultural milestone. Through this effort, Afua Asantewaa has demonstrated her commitment to her country and its musical heritage, while inspiring others to pursue their own extraordinary goals.
Her singing marathon serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of cultural representation on the global stage. Whether or not the record is officially recognized by Guinness, Afua Asantewaa’s achievement has already made an indelible mark in the hearts of Ghanaians and beyond.
