Following Ghana’s recent elections, which resulted in a change of government, former Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei has called for unity, reflection, and collaboration across the country. In a social media post that has sparked significant national conversation, Asiamah-Adjei acknowledged the various emotions that have emerged in the aftermath of the December 2024 elections. These feelings have ranged from blame and resentment to regret and self-reflection over past decisions, actions, and inactions. According to Asiamah-Adjei, this period of emotional turmoil offers a valuable opportunity for growth and understanding.

In her post, the former deputy minister proposed six key guiding principles, which she referred to as the “Ps.” These principles were designed to help guide the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in its new role as the opposition and foster a spirit of unity and progress moving forward. The six “Ps” she highlighted are:

  1. Past: Reflecting on history to learn from past mistakes, while honoring the contributions of those who paved the way for the present.
  2. People: Prioritizing the welfare of all Ghanaians by focusing on critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and economic opportunities that can improve the lives of the citizenry.
  3. Personality: Promoting integrity, empathy, and a visionary approach to leadership as the cornerstone of both governance and citizenship.
  4. Purpose: Focusing on economic development coupled with social justice to ensure progress that benefits all members of society.
  5. Priority: Setting clear priorities in key areas, such as infrastructure development, trade, technology, agriculture, and the growing field of renewable energy.
  6. Possibility: Understanding the needs and aspirations of the population and harnessing opportunities that can best serve them.

“These principles lay the foundation for a hopeful future, one defined by unity, generosity, and selflessness,” Asiamah-Adjei wrote, emphasizing the potential for growth and renewal.

Asiamah-Adjei also reflected on the NPP’s transition into opposition and encouraged the party to embrace this new role as an opportunity for introspection and self-improvement. She noted that the electorate’s call for change had been loud and clear, urging the NPP to come to terms with the outcome of the elections. Despite this shift, she encouraged party members to continue to support the newly elected government in its efforts to guide Ghana towards a brighter future.

While the NPP now faces the challenge of opposition, Asiamah-Adjei emphasized the importance of emerging from this phase stronger and more united. She called on party members to use this time to learn from past governance decisions and to take advantage of the opportunity to build a more cohesive and effective opposition. Expressing optimism for the future, she stressed that Ghana’s development will only be achieved through collaboration and constructive engagement, not division.

“May the journey ahead be one where we all benefit, where collaboration trumps division, and where the promise of a better Ghana becomes a tangible reality for every citizen,” Asiamah-Adjei stated, expressing hope for a united path forward.

She also took the opportunity to clarify the intent behind her message, making it clear that her words were meant to encourage reflection and not incite violence or disrespect. “This write-up is for sober reflection and not to promote violence or disrespect in any form,” she emphasized.

Asiamah-Adjei’s message resonates as a call for political maturity and introspection. Her emphasis on unity, reflection, and collaboration presents a roadmap for the NPP as it navigates its role in opposition and for the country as a whole. The guiding principles she outlined aim to foster a spirit of cooperation that will ultimately serve Ghana’s long-term growth and stability.
