Bawku: Mahama Denounces Soldier’s Killing, Calls on Military to Avoid Retaliation

President John Mahama has strongly denounced the killing of a soldier in Bawku, emphasizing that military personnel are deployed to conflict zones primarily to preserve peace and protect citizens, not to become targets in conflicts that do not directly involve them. During his ‘Thank You Tour’ in the Upper East Region on Thursday, March 20, 2025, Mahama also expressed his concerns over the violent response that followed the soldier’s death, including the assault and mistreatment of innocent residents in the area.
Addressing the situation, President Mahama acknowledged the understandable anger and frustration of the military in the wake of their colleague’s death but urged caution and restraint in handling the matter. While he recognized the emotional distress that comes with the loss of a soldier, he called on the Ghana Armed Forces to focus their efforts on apprehending the individuals responsible for the killing, rather than targeting innocent civilians in retaliation.
“I stand here today to unequivocally condemn the killing of a member of the Ghana Army in Bawku,” President Mahama said. “The men and women of our Armed Forces are peacekeepers sent to these areas to safeguard lives, properties, and ensure security. They are not part of the conflict, and it is absolutely unacceptable for them to become targets of a situation they have no part in.”
Mahama further expressed his condemnation of the military’s heavy-handed response, which resulted in injuries to many civilians. “I understand the anger and emotional turmoil that comes from losing a colleague, but we must resist the urge to act impulsively. Instead, we must focus on intelligence gathering and the systematic pursuit of those responsible, so that they can be brought to justice,” he added. His comments reflected a deep concern for maintaining the integrity and professionalism of the military, while also ensuring that innocent lives are not unnecessarily harmed.
In his address, Mahama extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the fallen soldier, recognizing the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces in the line of duty. He also expressed empathy for those affected by the military’s counteraction, particularly the civilians who were caught up in the violent aftermath of the soldier’s death. His remarks underscored the importance of maintaining peace and upholding human dignity even in the midst of conflict.
Further, the former president stressed the critical importance of peace and unity in fostering sustainable development, not only in Bawku but across the entire nation. He assured the people of the Upper East Region that his government would prioritize equitable development, particularly in sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, education, healthcare, and social welfare, ensuring that every region receives its fair share of resources and attention.
“True progress can only be achieved when all the people of Ghana work together towards a common purpose. The Upper East Region, like every other region in this country, deserves its fair share of development. This is not a favor; it is a fundamental right. My government remains committed to ensuring that no citizen, no region, is left behind,” Mahama stated.
He also promised that when the country’s resources are allocated, the Upper East Region would receive its fair portion. “When the national cake is shared, I give you my word that the people of this region will receive their rightful portion,” he pledged.
President Mahama’s comments were aimed at fostering a sense of unity, understanding, and collective responsibility as the country navigates the complexities of regional and national development. His focus on peace, security, and the need for fair treatment for all regions reflects his continued commitment to national unity and the balanced growth of every part of Ghana, ensuring that no region or group is neglected in the pursuit of progress.
In conclusion, Mahama’s remarks were not only a call for justice for the fallen soldier but also a plea for peace and unity, urging all parties involved to exercise restraint, prioritize peace, and focus on the collective good of the nation as a whole.
