Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has provided a generous donation of GH₵200,000 and 1,000 bags of cement to traders affected by the devastating fire that ravaged the Adum business district in Kumasi.

The fire, which broke out in the early hours of Friday, March 21, 2025, resulted in extensive damage, destroying numerous shops and goods valued at millions of Ghana cedis. The incident left many traders facing significant financial losses and uncertain futures.

On Tuesday, March 25, 2025, Dr. Bawumia visited the scene of the disaster to express his sympathy to the affected traders. During his visit, he emphasized the importance of community support and urged both private businesses and individuals to come forward and assist the traders in rebuilding their lives and businesses.

“I am donating GH₵200,000 and 1,000 bags of cement to help the victims recover. I also encourage others to step in and offer their support to help these traders restore their livelihoods,” Dr. Bawumia said. He stressed that the devastation caused by the fire required a collective effort to ensure the traders could rebuild and continue their businesses.

In addition to offering financial support, Dr. Bawumia called for patience as the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) investigates the cause of the fire. He urged the public to wait for the outcome of the investigation, which would shed light on the source of the blaze and help prevent similar incidents in the future.

“We need to allow the Ghana National Fire Service to complete their investigation to understand the cause of the fire. Once we have the findings, we can take measures to prevent such occurrences going forward,” he stated.

Dr. Bawumia also urged the government to fast-track the completion of the Kejetia Central Market Phase II project, which he noted was about 80% completed when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration left office. He believes that once the market project is completed, it will greatly benefit the traders, offering them a more modern and secure environment for their businesses.

“The completion of the Kejetia market will provide significant advantages to the traders here, and I call for its swift completion,” Dr. Bawumia added.

He further expressed his appreciation for the quick response of the fire service personnel, acknowledging the danger they faced while tackling the blaze. Dr. Bawumia also conveyed his well wishes to the two firefighters who were injured during the operation and had to be hospitalized.

“I have heard that two firefighters were hospitalized due to injuries sustained in the line of duty. I want to wish them a speedy recovery and thank them for their bravery,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia’s visit to the scene was accompanied by NPP Regional Chairman Bernard Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, and other party officials, who joined him in showing support for the affected traders and offering their assistance.

Through his donation and call for further support, Dr. Bawumia has shown a strong commitment to helping the traders affected by the Adum fire and ensuring that efforts are made to prevent similar disasters in the future.
