Bawumia Inspired by Former President Kufuor, Calls for NPP Unity Ahead of 2028 Elections

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate in the 2024 elections, has emphasized the importance of unity within the party as it prepares for the 2028 general elections. Drawing inspiration from former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s encouragement following the 2024 electoral defeat, Dr. Bawumia urged party members to focus on collective strength and resilience.
Drawing Inspiration from Kufuor’s Experience
During a thank-you tour in Enchi, Western North Region, on April 27, Dr. Bawumia shared that President Kufuor had offered words of encouragement after the 2024 elections. He recounted how President Kufuor reminded him of his own journey, noting that in 1996, he secured 39% of the vote in his first presidential bid but returned to win in 2000. Dr. Bawumia highlighted that securing nearly 42% in his initial attempt was a strong foundation to build upon, especially considering historical patterns in Ghana’s Fourth Republic. He pointed out that no NPP candidate had won the presidency on their first attempt, citing examples like President Kufuor and former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who both achieved victory on their third attempts.
Emphasizing Unity for Future Success
Dr. Bawumia reiterated the need for unity within the NPP, stating that despite the 2024 defeat, the party could return to power in 2028 by building on the momentum and lessons learned. He acknowledged the pain and disappointment felt by party members but urged them to refrain from blame games and focus on collective efforts to strengthen the party. He emphasized that unity is crucial for achieving the party’s goals and securing victory in the upcoming elections.
Commitment to Rebuilding the Party
As part of his thank-you tour, Dr. Bawumia, accompanied by NPP National Executive Council members including National Chairman Stephen Ntim and General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, engaged with party supporters to energize the grassroots and lay the foundation for a renewed push towards electoral success in 2028. He expressed confidence that with unity and determination, the NPP could overcome challenges and emerge victorious in the next electoral cycle.
In summary, Dr. Bawumia’s call for unity and his reflections on President Kufuor’s experience serve as a reminder of the importance of resilience and collective effort in the face of electoral setbacks. By focusing on unity and learning from past experiences, the NPP aims to strengthen its position and work towards a successful 2028 election campaign.
