Bawumia’s Aide: No Room for Complacency Despite Favorable Poll Results

Kwesi Botchwey Jnr, a key aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reiterated that the Bawumia campaign remains grounded and focused despite recent polling data indicating a strong lead in the race for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential ticket.
His comments come in response to the latest findings from Global Info Analytics, released on August 21, 2025. The nationwide survey placed Dr. Bawumia at the forefront of the NPP flagbearer contest, with 52% of delegates expressing their support for his candidacy. His nearest rival, former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, trailed significantly with 17% support.
Speaking in an interview on Eyewitness News with Sammi Wiafe on Friday, August 22, Botchwey Jnr welcomed the poll results but emphasized that they are not taking anything for granted. According to him, while the numbers are encouraging, the team views them as a reminder of the work ahead rather than a cause for celebration.
“We’re not allowing ourselves to get carried away by the poll,” Botchwey said. “We appreciate the positive feedback, but it doesn’t mean we slow down. In fact, it’s a sign that we need to intensify our outreach and continue engaging with party members across the country.”
However, Botchwey was quick to clarify that internal polling and grassroots feedback, while important, are not foolproof. He said the campaign would avoid the trap of complacency, which can be costly in politics.
“We treat this as a performance report. It tells us we’re doing some things right, but we still have to consolidate support and reach out to those who are undecided or not yet fully on board.”
The Global Info Analytics poll showed a significant gap between Dr. Bawumia and the other contenders in the race. After Kennedy Agyapong’s 17%, Dr. Bryan Acheampong received 3% support, followed by former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum with 1%. Other aspirants — including former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong, former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, and Addai Nimo — each garnered less than 1%.
Despite the apparent lead, the Bawumia campaign appears committed to its strategy of engaging directly with delegates and party stakeholders at all levels.
Botchwey Jnr highlighted the team’s commitment to humility and service, stating that Dr. Bawumia is not only focused on winning the flagbearership but also on uniting the party and preparing it for a strong showing in the 2028 general elections.
“We see this not just as a race for leadership, but as part of a broader mission to reposition the NPP as the party of progress and opportunity. Dr. Bawumia has the track record, vision, and temperament to lead Ghana forward,” he added.
As the NPP’s presidential primaries draw nearer, the stakes continue to rise. While Dr. Bawumia’s lead in the polls may offer his campaign a temporary boost, his team is making it clear that the journey is far from over. For them, the real work is just beginning.
