Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, overcame a shaky first-half performance to secure an impressive 4-2 victory over Benin’s Amazones in their second Pre-Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) friendly on Wednesday.
Coach Kim Lars opted to rest several key players, giving fringe squad members a chance to impress. However, the Benin side came out strongly, putting pressure on the Ghanaians early on and making the most of a lacklustre start by the Queens.
Nina Norshie gave Ghana an early lead with a fourth-minute strike, but the advantage was quickly overturned as the Amazones responded with two goals to go 2-1 up before halftime. The Black Queens struggled to find their rhythm in the opening 45 minutes, with forward Doris Boaduwaa missing a penalty and rattling the post multiple times in a frustrating half.
Ghana, however, returned from the break with renewed energy and purpose. Alice Kusi brought the match level with a composed finish in the 55th minute. That goal reignited the Queens’ attacking momentum, and just 15 minutes later, Susan Duah fired them ahead. Chantelle B. Hlorkah sealed the comeback with a well-taken strike in the 81st minute, ensuring a morale-boosting win for the team.
The second-half turnaround showcased the depth of the squad and the tactical adaptability of Coach Lars, who will be encouraged by his team’s response after a challenging first half.
The Black Queens will now shift focus to their final preparatory match ahead of next month’s TotalEnergies WAFCON tournament, with a highly anticipated clash against regional rivals Nigeria scheduled for Sunday, June 29.
