Black Satellites Set Sights on Fifth U-20 Trophy as Egypt Hosts Tournament

Ghana’s U-20 national team, the Black Satellites, are heading into the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with their eyes firmly set on a fifth title. With four previous championships under their belt—1993, 1999, 2009, and 2021—Ghana remains one of Africa’s most successful youth football nations.
Led by head coach Desmond Sakyi Ofei, the current squad blends tactical discipline with youthful energy. The team secured their spot in the tournament after finishing as runners-up in the WAFU Zone B Championship. Along the way, they posted important wins over Niger and Côte d’Ivoire, following group stage draws with Togo and Benin.
Star forward Jerry Afriyie emerged as a standout performer, scoring five goals in five matches to power Ghana’s qualification hopes. He’ll be a key player in Egypt, alongside Aziz Musibau and midfield general Araphat Mohammed.
Ghana is drawn into Group C, facing tough competition from reigning champions Senegal, DR Congo, and Central African Republic. However, the Black Satellites are no strangers to pressure and will rely on their history and team cohesion to advance.
Coach Ofei is known for an attacking 4-3-3 setup, favoring quick transitions and wide play. His coaching credentials include leading Ghana to gold at the 2024 African Games, and he now aims to replicate that success on the continental stage.
Beyond winning the trophy, the team is also chasing qualification for the FIFA U-20 World Cup. With a talented squad and strong leadership, Ghana enters the tournament not just as contenders—but as serious title hopefuls ready to reclaim their dominance in African youth football.
