Abetifi Member of Parliament and cabinet minister, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has officially announced his intention to contest for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential flagbearer position ahead of the 2028 general elections. His bold declaration was delivered during the NPP Constituency Chairmen Caucus Conference held in Kumasi, where he made a passionate call for party unity, discipline, and a focused roadmap to reclaim power.

Addressing a gathering of grassroots party leaders, Dr. Acheampong stated emphatically: “I’m not here to test the waters. I’m here for power.” His message was met with enthusiastic applause from the audience, signalling strong grassroots support for his presidential ambition.

Reflecting on his political journey, Dr. Acheampong recounted his rise through the ranks of the party—from a dedicated canvasser to serving as a Member of Parliament and Minister of State. He emphasized that his service to the NPP had always been driven by commitment and not personal ambition.

“I have served this party from the ground up,” he said. “My work speaks for itself. Today, I am not here for recognition but to lead this great party with purpose and direction. Our mission for 2028 is simple but powerful: we must unite, rebuild, and return to power stronger than before.”

His announcement comes at a time when the NPP is preparing for a highly anticipated presidential primary, officially scheduled for January 31, 2026. The date was confirmed by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) following a meeting on June 17, 2025. The primary is expected to be a defining moment for the NPP, which is currently working to reposition itself after its loss in the 2024 elections.

Several high-profile figures are expected to contest the flagbearer slot, including former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, and former Essikado-Ketan MP Joe Ghartey. Dr. Acheampong’s entry into the race adds further weight to what is shaping up to be a competitive field of experienced political heavyweights.

In his speech, Dr. Acheampong also urged fellow aspirants and party members to conduct a disciplined and vision-driven campaign, warning against personal attacks and factionalism. He stressed that internal division would only weaken the party’s chances in 2028.

“This is bigger than any one individual’s ambition,” he declared. “This is about the soul and future of the New Patriotic Party. We need every member, every region, and every voice at the table. It’s time to move forward with unity, strategy, and unwavering purpose.”

The announcement signals the beginning of what promises to be an intense campaign season within the NPP. With the party setting its sights on a political comeback, Dr. Acheampong’s message of unity and service may resonate strongly among a base eager for renewal and direction.

As the countdown to the January 2026 primaries begins, the political landscape within the NPP is set to heat up, with party faithful and political observers alike watching closely to see who will emerge as the leader to carry the NPP’s banner into the next general election.
