As Ghana prepares for its highly anticipated general elections on Saturday, December 7, 2024, the country’s entertainment industry is playing a more prominent role in shaping the political landscape. The vibrant sector, which spans actors, musicians, and social media influencers, is lending excitement and glamour to the electoral process, contributing to a fresh political atmosphere.

From renowned actors to famous musicians and influencers, these celebrities are using their fame and platforms to rally support for political candidates. This marks a significant shift in Ghana’s political scene, as it follows global trends where entertainers in countries like the United States have long campaigned for politicians. The 2008 election of Barack Obama in the U.S., which saw prominent figures from various industries openly backing him, has notably influenced the way celebrities in Ghana view their role in politics.

In Ghana, a number of high-profile actors like Prince David Osei, Agya Koo, Kafui Danku, and Kalybos, along with musicians and influencers, have made their political allegiance clear by supporting either the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) or the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). Since Ghana’s return to multiparty democracy in 1992, music has become a key part of the political conversation. Musicians like Jewel Ackah, Daddy Lumba, Lucky Mensah, Philipa Baafi, Kwabena Kwabena, Nacee, and Sarkodie have contributed to the political narrative by writing campaign songs or having their hits adopted by political parties.

These contributions have solidified the intersection of music and politics in Ghana’s democratic development. What used to be a subtle endorsement of political parties by entertainers is now a significant part of the campaign process. Celebrities are now seen actively campaigning, influencing public opinion, and mobilizing voters.

This year, some entertainers have taken a step further by running for office. Actor John Dumelo and actress Ebi Bright are both standing as parliamentary candidates for the NDC. Meanwhile, media figures such as Abeiku Aggrey Santana and Kofi Okyere Darko (KOD) have become vocal advocates for the NDC’s policies. On the NPP side, stars like Agya Koo, Bibi Bright, and gospel artist Diana Asamoah are championing the party’s achievements and openly supporting NPP presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Comic actor Kalybos has not only voiced support for the NPP but also appeared in campaign ads. Additionally, veteran Highlife artist Rex Omar has taken on the role of the NDC’s policy spokesperson for the creative arts sector.

These developments have sparked discussions about the impact of celebrity endorsements on Ghana’s political process. Many creatives now believe that times have changed, and that political opinions no longer equate to division. Some celebrities have even called for more active participation in political affairs. Actor Prince David Osei, for example, has urged creatives to engage more with politics. “We need to participate actively in politics, express our opinions, and hold leaders accountable,” he said. Osei emphasized that it is inspiring to see how influential voices can bring about positive changes for the country.

Actress Kafui Danku, best known for her role in Devil in a Dress, has urged peace and stability as the country heads toward the elections. She warned against the consequences of insecurity in neighboring countries and called for peace, urging voters to resist the temptation to use violence to express dissatisfaction. “The ballot is the best tool for change. Nothing is gained from war, and we must avoid letting conflicts tear us apart,” she said.

Moreover, Danku highlighted the shift in how political opinions from celebrities are now received. Unlike in the past, where celebrities risked alienating their followers by expressing political views, public attitudes are becoming more accepting of differing opinions.

For film producer Socrate Safo, celebrity involvement in politics brings an exciting dimension to the electoral process. “Creatives shouldn’t shy away from speaking out,” he advised. “They have tremendous influence, and they should use it positively, including in politics.” He also encouraged musicians to take advantage of political rallies and earn from their craft, rather than turning down such opportunities.

As election day approaches, the true impact of these celebrity endorsements on the election results remains uncertain. However, it is clear that the glamour and excitement of Ghana’s entertainment industry have added a new energy to the country’s democratic process, making the upcoming election one of the most lively and high-profile in recent years.
