Cocoa Farmers to Receive 70% of International Market Price, Says Government

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that cocoa farmers in Ghana will receive 70 percent of the international market price for their produce during the 2025 cocoa season. The initiative, he said, is part of efforts to improve farmer incomes and honour their vital contribution to the national economy.
Addressing residents and traditional leaders in Juaboso during his nationwide “Thank You Tour” following his victory in the 2024 presidential elections, President Mahama stated that his government was committed to ensuring equity in agricultural earnings.
“Our cocoa farmers have toiled for decades to support Ghana’s economy. It is only fair that they receive a just share of the global value chain. The sweat of our farmers must be rewarded with dignity,” he said.
The President emphasized that the improved pricing policy is just one aspect of a broader agenda aimed at revitalizing the agricultural sector and ensuring that farmers enjoy improved livelihoods.
Supporting Agriculture and Local Brands
President Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to equipping farmers with the resources and training they need to thrive. He stated that under his leadership, government would strengthen agricultural extension services and ensure access to quality inputs such as fertilizers, seedlings, and irrigation.
According to him, this approach will not only increase productivity but also create jobs, reduce food imports, and promote the “Feed Ghana” and “Made in Ghana” initiatives, which aim to enhance food security and encourage the consumption of locally produced goods.
“We believe that when farmers succeed, the entire economy benefits. That is why we’re investing in their growth and promoting local brands across the country,” he said.
Upgrading Infrastructure in Western North
In addition to agricultural reforms, the President outlined a series of infrastructure projects to boost development in the Western North Region. He pledged to reconstruct critical road networks that have suffered years of neglect, including the Dadieso-Akontombra and Sefwi-Bekwai-Asankragwa roads.
He assured the people that these projects would be executed to modern engineering standards to enhance transportation, trade, and connectivity between communities.
“We are not just patching potholes; we’re committed to building durable, all-weather roads that can support economic activity and ease travel for residents,” he stated.
Education, Health and Youth Development
On education, President Mahama disclosed plans to establish a new public university in the region. He noted that this would reduce the burden on students who currently travel to distant regions for tertiary education, and help build skilled manpower in Western North.
He also assured the public that all district hospitals in the region would be upgraded and properly equipped to provide quality health services. These interventions, he said, are vital to building resilient communities and ensuring access to essential social services.
While interacting with students at Juaboso Senior High School, the President responded to their request for a new school bus, promising to provide the needed support promptly.
As part of efforts to promote sports and recreation, President Mahama further announced that six modern stadiums would be constructed across the newly created regions, including Western North, to serve as hubs for youth development and community engagement.
Appreciation and Local Leadership Praise
The President also praised the role of traditional leaders and religious institutions in preserving peace and promoting development. He acknowledged their partnership in governance and pledged continued collaboration.
Nana Kofi Ahenkan II, Chief of Sefwi Boizan and Kontihene of the Sefwi Wiawso Traditional Council, expressed gratitude for the President’s attention to the region. He also lauded the appointment of several key officials from Western North into top government roles, calling it a sign of trust and inclusion.
Western North Regional Minister, Mr. Wilbert Petty Brentum, welcomed the President and assured him of the region’s readiness to support the government’s development agenda. He pledged to work diligently to implement policies that will bring progress to the area.
