Ghanaian rapper D-Cryme has officially declared his candidacy for the presidency of the Student Representative Council (SRC) at Methodist University Ghana.

On April 7, 2025, the “Kill Me Shy” hitmaker shared his decision with his followers via a post on social media, signaling his intent to bring a fresh and transformational leadership style to the institution.

D-Cryme, whose real name is Darlington Agyekum, urged students to join him in his vision for a more transparent, accountable, and proactive form of governance. In his announcement, he promised to create an environment where students’ needs are prioritized, and their voices heard. He stated that his leadership would focus on tackling key challenges within the student body while encouraging active participation and engagement in decision-making processes.

“Dear fellow students, the time for transformational leadership is NOW! Team D-Cryme is here to champion a new era of Transparency, Accountability, and Action. Our mission is clear: to build a campus that supports, protects, and uplifts every student,” he wrote in his post.

As part of his vision, D-Cryme has outlined several areas he plans to focus on if elected. These include improving academic support structures, addressing student welfare, and advocating for improvements in campus infrastructure. He also emphasized the importance of increasing student engagement, providing more opportunities for active participation in governance, and enhancing access to scholarships and financial aid programs for students in need.

D-Cryme’s move into campus politics is part of a growing trend of Ghanaian entertainers stepping into leadership roles within academic institutions. His candidacy follows in the footsteps of other notable artists who have embraced political leadership. For example, reggae/dancehall artist Samini was inaugurated as the SRC President at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) on August 23, 2022. Additionally, rapper Guru, whose real name is Maradona Adjei Yeboah, is currently serving as the SRC President at the University of Ghana.

D-Cryme’s decision to enter politics demonstrates his commitment to bringing change and championing student issues, reflecting the rising involvement of creative professionals in shaping academic and social policies. His bid for SRC president will certainly capture the attention of students, as he brings his experience and influence as a prominent figure in the Ghanaian entertainment industry to the political arena.
