Dr. Opoku Prempeh Stresses Sustained Support for Grieving Families
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 general elections, has urged Ghanaians to reflect deeply on the recent tragic events that have claimed the lives of dedicated public servants, including two incumbent ministers of state.
Speaking at a solemn wreath-laying ceremony held in the gardens of the Jubilee House as part of a three-day national mourning period, Dr. Opoku Prempeh called for the nation to unite in grief and use the moment as an opportunity to renew its commitment to building a stronger, more compassionate Ghana.
“This is not just a time for mourning,” he said. “It is a time to come together, to comfort those who grieve, and to recommit ourselves to the Ghana our departed heroes envisioned.”
He emphasized that leadership must go beyond rhetoric and political rivalry. According to him, true leadership is measured by service to the people and by initiatives that meaningfully improve the lives of ordinary citizens.
Personal Tributes
Paying tribute to his fallen colleagues, Dr. Opoku Prempeh recalled his personal and professional relationships with each of them.
He described the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, as not only a fellow medical professional but also a friend and brother. He also spoke fondly of the late Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, with whom he shared frequent conversations during intense campaign seasons, exchanging ideas and a shared vision for Ghana’s progress.
Reflecting on his long-standing bond with the late Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Dr. Opoku Prempeh noted that for over 25 years, he had regularly attended Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly meetings whenever Dr. Sarpong invited Members of Parliament — a testament to their enduring friendship and mutual respect.
A Call for Long-Term Support
While acknowledging the national outpouring of grief, Dr. Opoku Prempeh reminded Ghanaians that once the ceremonies conclude and the public attention fades, the bereaved families will continue to endure their personal pain in silence.
He therefore appealed to the public to extend love, empathy, and practical support to these families well beyond the period of official mourning.
“This tragedy should inspire us to be more compassionate, more united, and more committed to the values our fallen compatriots stood for,” he concluded.
