Empress Gifty Sues Agradaa for GH₵20 Million Over Alleged Defamation

Gospel musician Empress Gifty has filed a defamation lawsuit against Evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, demanding GH¢20 million in damages. This legal action follows a series of damaging statements made by Agradaa during a live broadcast on social media, which Empress Gifty claims have severely harmed her reputation and caused personal distress.
The incident at the heart of the lawsuit occurred on May 13, 2025, when Nana Agradaa, in a live broadcast streamed on Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube, allegedly made a series of false and defamatory remarks about both Empress Gifty and her husband, Hopeson Adorye. Agradaa and Adorye have been engaged in a public dispute, and the exchange took a personal turn when Agradaa targeted the gospel singer during her broadcast.
In the legal documents filed, Empress Gifty outlined the offensive statements that she argues were damaging both in their content and in their public dissemination. According to the writ, the remarks made by Agradaa were understood to imply the following:
-
Empress Gifty is a promiscuous woman and a prostitute.
-
She engages in zoophilia and uses this behavior to financially support her husband.
-
Empress Gifty is an adulterous wife, having extramarital affairs with various men, including pastors.
-
Some pastors allegedly have sexual relations with her before she is allowed to perform during church services.
-
She is mentally unstable, or “an imbecile.”
Empress Gifty claims that these false and harmful assertions, made during a live broadcast, quickly went viral. Social media users shared and commented on the content, which contributed to the widespread damage to her public image. As a result, the defamatory remarks were not only confined to Ghana but were shared globally across various online platforms and news portals, causing significant reputational harm to the singer.
The gospel artist also highlighted the negative impact these comments have had on her personal life, particularly concerning her children. She stated that the online backlash has extended to her family, with her children facing ridicule from their peers at school due to the viral nature of the accusations. Empress Gifty expressed concern for the emotional well-being of her children, who have been subjected to taunting as a direct result of the statements made by Agradaa.
In addition, Empress Gifty emphasized that the impact of Agradaa’s words was magnified by the rapid spread of the broadcast across the internet, aided by social media influencers and bloggers who republished the content. The widespread nature of the statements, which crossed geographical boundaries and reached international audiences, further compounded the damage to her reputation.
As part of the defamation suit, Empress Gifty is seeking compensation of GH¢20 million, arguing that the harm caused to her reputation and personal life warrants such an amount. She also seeks a public retraction from Nana Agradaa, along with an apology issued through the same social media platforms where the defamatory statements were made.
The case has attracted widespread attention, not only because of the prominent figures involved but also due to its implications for the broader issue of online defamation in Ghana. With the increasing use of social media for public discourse, this case could set a significant precedent for how defamation lawsuits are handled in the digital age, particularly when the spread of false information is amplified through online platforms.
Empress Gifty’s legal action serves as a reminder of the power and consequences of social media in shaping public opinion. It also highlights the importance of accountability for individuals who use their platforms to make harmful and false statements about others. As the legal proceedings unfold, many will be watching closely to see how the courts address this case of digital defamation and the broader issues surrounding online speech.
