A devastating fire broke out early this morning at a slum near Kissiman Junction, close to Achimota-Samodak, claiming the life of a four-month-old baby. The fire engulfed more than 20 wooden structures, which were used as residences, and destroyed their contents. Despite the quick response of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the infant was unable to be rescued.

The charred remains of the baby have been handed over to the police for further investigation, and authorities are working to determine the cause of the fire. According to Divisional Officer Two (DO II) Desmond E. Ackah, the Head of Public Relations at GNFS, firefighters from the Legon and Abelemkpe Fire Stations were alerted to the fire at 4:12 a.m. and arrived on the scene just 12 minutes later.

The firefighters acted quickly to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings, including a warehouse. By 5:02 a.m., the fire had been brought under control. “Firefighters are now conducting overhauling operations to ensure that any remaining flames are completely extinguished,” said Ackah.

The tragedy has left the community in shock, as the loss of the infant has deeply affected residents. Meanwhile, the investigation into the cause of the fire continues, as authorities work to provide answers and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
