Hamas announces delay in next hostage release, accusing Israel of violating deal terms

Hamas has announced a delay in the scheduled release of hostages, which was set to take place in Gaza on Saturday, accusing Israel of violating the terms of the ceasefire agreement. The handover of prisoners will be postponed “until further notice,” Hamas stated, demanding that Israel fulfill its obligations before any release can occur.
Abu Obeida, a spokesperson for Hamas’s Qassam Brigades, claimed that the delay is due to Israel’s failure to meet key aspects of the agreement, including issues related to the return of displaced people and the delivery of humanitarian aid. In a post on X, Obeida confirmed that the release would not proceed as planned, asserting that Hamas would only resume the process once Israel “commits to and compensates for the entitlements” that had been previously agreed upon. He also emphasized Hamas’s continued commitment to the ceasefire agreement, as long as Israel adheres to it.
Hamas issued the announcement five days ahead of the scheduled handover to allow mediators time to pressure Israel into complying with the agreement. The group left open the possibility of continuing the exchange if Israel meets its commitments, aiming to resolve the situation without further delays. However, Hamas outlined several alleged violations by Israel over the past weeks, including delays in allowing essential supplies, such as medicine, fuel, and tents, into Gaza. They also accused Israel of targeting displaced civilians and hindering relief efforts.
In response, Israel condemned Hamas’s decision as a direct violation of the ceasefire deal. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz instructed the military to prepare for all potential scenarios in Gaza. Katz described Hamas’s delay as an outright breach of the agreement and the planned hostage release.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has convened meetings with security officials to assess the situation. In light of Hamas’s announcement, a cabinet meeting initially scheduled for the evening was moved to the morning. The Israeli government is taking the situation seriously, preparing for possible consequences should the ceasefire agreement continue to unravel.
Hamas’s postponement has raised tensions, leaving the door open for resolution if Israel meets its commitments but also escalating the conflict if those terms are not met.
