Kenya Goalkeeper Being Investigated for Alleged Involvement in Match-Fixing

The Kenya Football Federation (FKF) has initiated an investigation into allegations that goalkeeper Patrick Matasi may be involved in match-fixing. The 37-year-old, who plays for Kakamega Homeboyz in the Kenyan Premier League, has represented the Harambee Stars over 30 times, with his most recent international appearance coming in October during a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
The investigation was triggered by the appearance of an undated video online, which, although unverified by the BBC, reportedly shows Matasi discussing a potential deal to influence the outcome of a league match. In the video, Matasi allegedly engages in a conversation that suggests the manipulation of a match result, leading to the serious accusations.
However, Cleophas Shimanyula, the owner of Kakamega Homeboyz, has publicly expressed his support for Matasi. He stated that the veteran goalkeeper was surprised by the video’s contents and has denied any involvement in match-fixing. “I have spoken with him, and he was equally shocked by the video. He insists he has no knowledge of any match-fixing,” Shimanyula explained to BBC Sport Africa.
In response to the allegations, the FKF has confirmed that it is working closely with FIFA, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and other relevant authorities to investigate the claims thoroughly. The FKF emphasized that it adheres to a strict zero-tolerance policy regarding match manipulation, making it clear that the integrity of football in Kenya must be maintained. “We uphold a zero-tolerance policy towards match manipulation and remain fully committed to preserving the integrity of our competitions,” the FKF said in an official statement.
The FKF also assured the public that the investigation would adhere to the guidelines outlined by FIFA and the FKF’s own anti-match manipulation regulations. The process will be transparent, fair, and comprehensive, ensuring that both Matasi and his club, Kakamega Homeboyz, are treated with respect. Any actions taken will be based on the findings of the investigation, and both Matasi and the club’s rights will be safeguarded throughout the process.
Shimanyula, in defense of Matasi, pointed out the goalkeeper’s recent strong performances with the club. Since joining Kakamega Homeboyz a month ago, Matasi has kept three clean sheets in as many matches, showing no signs of any wrongdoing on the field. “When we saw the video, we found that Matasi has done no wrong to the club,” Shimanyula said. “A video can be misinterpreted or present false narratives, and we cannot take everything at face value.”
Shimanyula further stressed that Matasi would continue to play for the club until there is concrete evidence proving his involvement in any unethical activities. “He is innocent until proven guilty, and unless the FKF provides us with evidence or officially informs us of any suspicion, we will not act,” Shimanyula added. “We will continue to trust Matasi as a player for Kakamega Homeboyz.”
The FKF has appealed to the public for credible information to assist with the investigation, assuring that all reports will be handled confidentially. Shimanyula also issued a challenge to the Kenyan footballing community to come forward with any evidence against Matasi if they have it. “Kakamega Homeboyz is firmly against any form of match-fixing,” he emphasized. “In the past, we have reported instances of match-fixing involving some of our players, and FIFA has handed down appropriate punishments. We have our internal systems for monitoring match-fixing, and while I cannot speak for other clubs, we urge anyone with evidence against Matasi to bring it forward.”
This investigation serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of maintaining integrity in football, particularly in the face of growing concerns about match-fixing across the globe. The FKF’s commitment to handling the matter with the seriousness it deserves reflects the need to protect the sport’s reputation, and the investigation will ultimately determine whether Matasi is guilty or innocent of the allegations. Until then, both the player and his club will continue their work, with Kakamega Homeboyz standing firmly behind their goalkeeper unless proven otherwise.
