Lorry Terminal Project Launched by DVLA to Make Services More Accessible to Drivers

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has launched a new initiative known as the Lorry Terminal Project, aimed at decentralising its services and bringing them directly to the doorsteps of commercial drivers and the wider public.
This forward-thinking project allows drivers to access essential DVLA services at major lorry terminals nationwide, eliminating the need to travel to traditional DVLA offices. Services available through the programme include new driver’s licence applications, licence renewals, replacements for missing or expired licences, foreign licence conversions, international driving permits, and licence upgrades.
Speaking at the launch, DVLA’s Chief Executive Officer, Julius Neequaye Kotey, described the project as part of a broader agenda to enhance service delivery and increase efficiency across Ghana’s transport sector.
“This initiative ensures that qualified drivers can conveniently access the certification they need to operate legally and safely,” Mr. Kotey said.
He also reminded drivers of the licence validity timelines, explaining that after the initial issuance, a licence must be renewed after two years, again renewed two years later, and then fully replaced one year after the second renewal. Each stage involves mandatory eye tests to ensure drivers maintain the visual standards required for road safety.
To support this process, DVLA has partnered with the Ghana Optometric Association to conduct on-site vision screening as part of the licensing process at the lorry terminals.
Mr. Kotey encouraged all commercial drivers to take full advantage of the initiative, noting that while it primarily targets transport operators, it remains open to the general public.
“This project is designed with you in mind,” he told drivers. “It’s about saving you time, money, and ensuring you remain compliant with road regulations.”
Positive Feedback from Drivers
Drivers from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) at the Circle-Kaneshie Station praised the initiative, calling it a major time-saver and a cost-effective solution to maintaining valid driving documents.
According to the drivers, having DVLA services within reach not only promotes compliance but also reduces the burden of traveling long distances and spending hours at central offices.
