Mahama Accuses Akufo-Addo/Bawumia Administration of Focusing on Slogans Rather Than Action
John Mahama, the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed sharp criticism of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration, accusing them of neglecting the urgent issues facing the people of Ghana and prioritizing slogans over tangible action. According to Mahama, the current government’s failure to address critical concerns has led to widespread hardship among the populace, particularly farmers, whose plight he believes has been ignored for far too long.
In a Facebook post shared on November 25, Mahama lamented the government’s emphasis on words rather than real solutions. He emphasized that under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia, the country has seen little progress in addressing the pressing problems that Ghanaians face daily. He pointed out that the administration’s focus on catchy slogans has not translated into the necessary policies and actions that would improve the lives of ordinary citizens.
“Over the last 8 years, this Addo-Bawumia government has prioritised slogans over action. They have forgotten about our farmers,” Mahama wrote, emphasizing that farmers, a key segment of the Ghanaian population, have been neglected despite their significant contributions to the nation’s economy. Mahama reassured his supporters that if the NDC were to win the upcoming general elections in 2024, his administration would swiftly implement policies aimed at revitalizing the agricultural sector and supporting farmers.
Mahama’s criticism extends beyond the agricultural sector, as he highlighted several other challenges Ghanaians are facing under the current government. Among these issues are the soaring prices of food and goods, the lack of significant development in rural and urban communities, and the growing economic instability. The former president blamed the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for mismanaging the country’s resources, claiming that their “criminal supervision” of the economy has contributed significantly to the current state of hardship in Ghana.
He argued that the NPP government’s inability to effectively govern and manage the nation’s resources has led to an economic crisis that has adversely affected the average Ghanaian. “The hardship facing Ghanaians, the rising prices of food, the lack of development in our communities, among other challenges, is the result of the criminal supervision of the destruction of the economy by the NPP government,” Mahama stated in his post.
Mahama also touched on his recent visit to the Western Region, where he met with members of the Western Regional House of Chiefs in Sekondi. During this meeting, the traditional leaders voiced their frustrations over the lack of development in their region over the past eight years of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration. Mahama acknowledged the concerns raised by the chiefs and expressed his dismay over the deteriorating state of infrastructure in the region, particularly the poor condition of roads.
“I am appalled at the state of roads in the twin city, and other constituencies in the region, not to mention the stagnation of development,” Mahama said, adding that it was clear to him that the Western Region, once a hub of development, had suffered from the government’s failure to prioritize infrastructure and regional development. Mahama’s comments highlighted the disparity between the promises made by the Akufo-Addo government and the reality on the ground, as many regions, particularly the Western Region, have experienced little to no progress in terms of infrastructure and economic development.
In contrast to the current government’s approach, Mahama outlined the NDC’s vision for a “Reset Ghana” agenda, which he promised would focus on rebuilding the nation’s economy, improving infrastructure, and addressing the needs of the most vulnerable. Mahama assured Ghanaians that his government would not merely talk about solutions, but would take concrete steps to address the issues facing the country.
“Our agenda to Reset Ghana towards Building the Ghana we want will benefit the region and lift up the state of infrastructure here,” Mahama said, referring to his plan to revitalize the Western Region and other underdeveloped parts of the country. He emphasized that the NDC would prioritize policies that deliver real change and ensure that all Ghanaians benefit from the nation’s resources.
