Mfantsipim Marks 148th Anniversary – Students Encouraged to Focus on Strong Moral Character and Education
Mfantsipim School recently marked its 148th anniversary with a series of celebrations, highlighting its long-standing tradition of academic excellence. During the event, former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko delivered a powerful speech encouraging students and educational leaders to place a greater emphasis on moral character. Agyarko, a member of the 1974 Mfantsipim Old Boys Association (MOBA), underscored the importance of building a strong character throughout one’s educational journey. He warned that competence without integrity could be dangerous, noting, “There is nothing more dangerous than a learned thief.” Agyarko further emphasized that discipline and hard work are key to developing good character. He urged the students to continue Mfantsipim’s proud legacy of moral excellence, which has contributed to the success of many influential individuals worldwide.
In addition to the focus on character, Dr. Alex Boateng Atakorah, the Chief Operating Officer of the Technical and Logistics Group at Jospong Group of Companies, also spoke at the event. A member of the 1994 MOBA group, Dr. Atakorah highlighted the transformative role of technology in education. He stressed the importance of embracing digital transformation, particularly the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), to enhance the learning experience. According to Dr. Atakorah, technology can provide personalized education, preparing students with the essential skills needed for success in the modern, digital age.
Mfantsipim’s headmaster, Very Rev. Ebenezer Kobina Aidoo, took the opportunity to express his gratitude to the various stakeholders who have supported the school’s growth over the years. He acknowledged the continued support of parents, staff, the Methodist Church, and MOBA. Aidoo also thanked the Methodist Church for providing spiritual guidance, which has been fundamental to the school’s development and success.
A significant announcement during the anniversary celebration came from Moses Baiden, the Ebusuapanyin of MOBA. He unveiled plans for the launch of a $10 million endowment fund, aimed at creating a sustainable financial resource for the school’s future. Baiden called on all Mfantsipim alumni to contribute generously to the fund, with the goal of making Mfantsipim School one of the most prestigious schools in the world.
The head boy of Mfantsipim School, Ato Kwamina Essilfie, took the opportunity to thank alumni for their continuous support and guidance. He encouraged his fellow students to uphold the school’s core values and contribute to its continued success. Essilfie expressed his pride in being part of a school with such a rich history and strong traditions.
The Omanhen of the Oguaa Traditional Area, Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II, was also present at the celebration. He praised Mfantsipim School for its academic achievements, particularly commending the school’s National Science and Math Quiz (NSMQ) team for bringing the coveted trophy to Cape Coast for the first time. This achievement further solidified Mfantsipim’s standing as a leader in academic excellence.
Throughout the celebration, numerous awards were given to students and staff for their exceptional achievements. Leadership awards went to the head boy, Ato Kwamina Essilfie; deputy head boy (academic), Kevin B. Lokko; deputy head boy (domestic), Prince Dadson; and deputy head boy (technical), Gerald Boansi. These students were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the school’s leadership structure.
Academic excellence was also celebrated, with Godwin Egyir named Scholar of the Year for his exceptional performance in the 2023 WASSCE, earning 8As and excelling in Mathematics, Physics, and Technical Drawing. The 1967 MOBA year group awarded him for his remarkable achievements. Other science awards were presented to Christian Amoako Mensah Yeboah and Eduam George Kobina Manso, who were recognized as the second- and third-best science students, respectively.
The school also recognized several talented students in other areas. Agambire Prosper Ayinaba, Segbenya Edem, and Appiah-Thompson Peter Abieku were celebrated as the best STEM students in Forms 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Additionally, Kumi Asiamah received the Actor of the Year award, Clifford Okyere was named Dancer of the Year, David Jackson was honored as Basketball Player of the Year, and Isaac Mensah received the Best Form 3 Chemistry Student award.
These awards and recognitions serve as a testament to Mfantsipim School’s commitment to fostering academic, leadership, and extracurricular excellence. As the school continues its tradition of advancing educational excellence, it remains dedicated to shaping future leaders who will make meaningful contributions to Ghana and beyond.
