The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has launched a comprehensive initiative to combat misinformation and disinformation during Ghana’s 2024 elections. This effort includes the deployment of 30 trained media monitors and 20 regional fact-checkers, who will work diligently across the country to track and counter false news, especially in rural areas where misinformation can spread rapidly.

The initiative is made possible by partnerships with over 100 radio and television stations, which will provide valuable support in the monitoring process. By working closely with these media outlets, the MFWA seeks to ensure the public is informed with accurate and credible information, particularly as the elections draw closer. The MFWA aims to address the growing problem of misinformation that could affect the integrity of the election process.

At the official opening of the 2024 Media Situation Room in Accra on Wednesday, December 4, Senior Programs Officer for MFWA, Kwaku Krobea Asante, emphasized the importance of the project. He explained that the initiative is designed to monitor media outlets that have been identified as sources of problematic content. “We have monitors stationed across the country, listening to known troublesome radio and TV stations. If necessary, they will provide specific recordings, pointing out, ‘This is what is happening here,’” he said. This approach will help ensure that any misleading content is identified and addressed promptly.

The MFWA has equipped its media monitors with state-of-the-art tools and technology to track media coverage. These monitors are tasked with listening to broadcasts from potentially problematic stations and flagging any content that could mislead the public. Krobea Asante noted that the MFWA’s focus extends beyond traditional fake news, pointing to the increasing prevalence of AI-generated content that targets political figures. “You (media monitors) listen to everything, and you can identify when content is generated by AI or manipulated,” he said, highlighting the complexity of today’s media landscape. As the election day approaches, he added, this type of fake content is expected to become more widespread.

In addition to monitoring traditional forms of media, the MFWA’s Situation Room will focus on the increasing use of AI technology to create fabricated content. Krobea Asante acknowledged that AI-generated misinformation is a growing concern, particularly when it involves the manipulation of images or videos targeting politicians or public figures. “This issue will continue, especially as we approach December 7,” he said, referring to the election day.

The 30 trained media monitors have been assigned to specific radio and TV stations that are known for spreading misinformation or causing disruption in the media landscape. Their role involves documenting suspicious content by recording broadcasts and providing MFWA with the necessary material to counter the misinformation. This proactive approach ensures that any misleading news is addressed in real-time.

The MFWA’s initiative to tackle misinformation during the elections is part of a broader effort to preserve the credibility of Ghana’s democratic process. As the 2024 elections approach, the MFWA’s work aims to create a transparent and accurate information flow, making sure that Ghanaians are not swayed by false narratives. This strategy also involves collaborating with the media to ensure they adhere to ethical standards, especially during such a critical period for the nation.

The MFWA’s initiative is crucial for strengthening the trust between the electorate and the media, which is essential for a healthy democratic system. By providing tools, training, and resources to media monitors and fact-checkers, the MFWA hopes to create a more informed electorate, free from the effects of false and misleading content. With the continued support of its media partners, the MFWA plans to carry out this mission until the election day, ensuring that the public is given accurate and truthful information every step of the way.
