Hon. Owen Kwame Frimpong, the NDC Member of Parliament for the Lower West Akim Constituency, has made a formal appeal to the striking Zoomlion workers in Asamankese and surrounding areas to resume their duties after a three-week-long strike. The strike has raised serious concerns due to the significant health risks posed to the local residents, as waste collection and sanitation services have been severely disrupted.

The appeal comes after the workers, who have been protesting over unpaid wages, engaged in a meeting with the Asamankese Municipal Assembly. During the meeting, the workers openly expressed their frustrations, highlighting the financial difficulties they have been facing due to the non-payment of their salaries. The strike, which began in protest of the outstanding wages, has had a direct impact on public health, as uncollected waste continues to accumulate in the streets, creating an unsanitary environment for the residents of the area.

Hon. Frimpong acknowledged the legitimate concerns of the workers and emphasized the importance of addressing their grievances in a fair and timely manner. However, he also highlighted the urgency of returning to work, given the immediate health threats posed by the current sanitation crisis. He urged the workers to understand the broader implications of the ongoing strike, particularly its adverse effects on the wellbeing of the community.

In his appeal, Hon. Frimpong assured the workers that their outstanding payments would be settled within a month. He emphasized that the government and the relevant authorities are committed to resolving the financial issues and ensuring that workers are compensated for their labor. The MP’s statement sought to strike a balance between acknowledging the workers’ struggles and the need for urgent action to safeguard public health and the environment.

The situation in Asamankese has highlighted the critical role that sanitation workers play in maintaining public health and the functioning of urban infrastructure. The MP’s intervention underscores the importance of dialogue between workers, local authorities, and the government in resolving labor disputes while ensuring that public services are not disrupted.

Hon. Frimpong concluded his statement by once again urging the Zoomlion workers to return to their posts for the sake of the community’s health and wellbeing, while also assuring them that their concerns would be addressed in the coming weeks.
