MP-elect Warns That Ghanaians Are Growing Disillusioned; Predicts Decline in Campaign Rally Attendance

Joseph Azumah, the newly elected Member of Parliament for the Adansi Akrofuom Constituency, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has raised concerns about the growing disillusionment among Ghanaians with their political leaders. In an interview on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, hosted by Akua Asieduwaa, Azumah highlighted the deepening dissatisfaction with the political system, particularly as many politicians fail to fulfill the promises they make during campaigns.
Azumah, who recently emerged victorious in a constituency traditionally held by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), expressed his worry that this disconnect between politicians and the public is undermining trust in the political process. He pointed out that a key issue contributing to this dissatisfaction is the inability of many politicians to deliver on the commitments made during elections. “A lot of politicians have made Ghanaians lose interest in politics. A time will come when no one will attend a campaign rally. No one will come out and listen to our message because the people are fed up due to unfulfilled campaign promises,” Azumah lamented.
This widespread disenchantment, according to Azumah, poses a serious threat to Ghana’s democracy. He warned that if the trend continues, citizens may increasingly disengage from political life altogether. The lack of accountability and failure to follow through on promises, he believes, could lead to a situation where political rallies and campaigns no longer resonate with the electorate, leading to a weakened democracy. The lack of political participation in turn would threaten the very foundation of the democratic process. “If this continues, no one will bother to participate in elections or listen to political parties anymore. That would be a serious issue for the country,” he added.
Despite these concerns, Azumah remains hopeful that the tide can be turned. He is committed to changing the narrative by leading with integrity, transparency, and a focus on delivering for his constituents. Azumah expressed his firm belief that he could rebuild trust between the people and politicians through honest governance. He emphasized that he intends to prove that politicians can indeed be accountable and genuinely focus on the needs of their constituents, unlike many of those who have come before him. “I am committed to proving that politicians can be accountable and focused on the needs of the people,” he stated.
Azumah’s victory in the Adansi Akrofuom Constituency is a notable achievement for the NDC, especially given the seat’s historical alignment with the NPP. His election marked a significant shift in the region during the 2024 general elections, indicating growing support for the NDC. This victory further bolstered his resolve to be a different kind of politician—one who not only keeps campaign promises but also engages with the electorate in a meaningful and transparent way.
For Azumah, the challenge now lies in delivering on his promises and proving to his constituents that he is the accountable leader they need. His victory represents an opportunity for him to demonstrate that politicians can make a tangible difference in the lives of ordinary people by being honest and dependable. He has made it clear that his approach will be different from the often seen pattern of unfulfilled promises, which he believes have contributed to the growing public disengagement with politics.
Azumah’s commitment to this cause reflects a larger trend within the political landscape of Ghana, where many elected officials are increasingly called upon to show their accountability through action. His pledge to reconnect with the electorate, deliver on promises, and restore faith in the democratic system is seen as essential for the future of Ghana’s democracy. If he and others like him succeed, they may be able to shift public sentiment and re-engage Ghanaians in the political process, ensuring that the nation’s democracy remains strong and vibrant.
