A significant political shift has taken place in the Western Region, as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) achieved a major victory, securing 15 out of the 17 parliamentary seats in the region during the recent elections. This sweeping success has made waves in the region, a stronghold for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), signaling a remarkable change in political dynamics.

Nana Toku attributes the NDC’s victory to a collective effort and dedication, along with a strong message from the people of the Western Region, who are disillusioned with the lack of progress they have seen under the current administration. According to Nana Toku, the people are fed up with the promises made by the NPP over the past eight years that have not resulted in tangible development. Despite the region’s abundance of resources, Nana Toku noted that it has witnessed minimal development, with many of the promises made by the ruling government remaining unfulfilled. “The people of the Western Region are frustrated with the lack of development, and they are now turning to the NDC. They are saying enough is enough and giving us a chance to prove ourselves,” he said.

Nana Toku emphasized that the NDC plans to learn from the mistakes of the current government and improve upon the shortcomings that led to the people’s frustration. This approach, he explained, will be key to winning back the trust of the people and ensuring that the promises made are kept. “We’re committed to learning from the mistakes of the past and doing things differently. When given the chance, we’ll ensure that the needs of our people are met. We’re focused on development, and that’s what the NDC will deliver. People vote for progress, and we’re dedicated to making that a reality,” he said. He further asserted that the NDC’s commitment to development means that these seats will remain in their hands and not revert to the NPP.

Nana Toku also outlined the party’s development plan for the Western Region, highlighting the need to address the unique challenges the region faces. Despite being rich in natural resources, Nana Toku argued, the region has not seen the fair share of benefits from these resources. He called for a unified approach to regional development, one that goes beyond political differences and focuses on the collective good. “We need to set aside our political differences and work together to develop the region. We’ll bring together paramount chiefs, create a proposal, and implement it with the help of the president-elect and his team,” he said.

He acknowledged that, for the past eight years, the Western Region has suffered from a lack of development, widespread hunger, and economic hardship. However, he assured that the NDC is determined to bring about change. “We need a plan that brings everyone together, allowing every individual to contribute their ideas and expertise toward the region’s development,” Nana Toku added.

In line with the party’s development goals, Nana Toku revealed that the NDC would focus on completing existing projects before launching new ones. This approach aligns with John Mahama’s previous statement that, given the current economic situation, the NDC government would focus on finishing abandoned infrastructural projects. “We will take inventory of all ongoing projects and prioritize finishing them. This approach will allow us to maximize the impact of our limited resources and ensure that tangible benefits are delivered to the communities,” Nana Toku explained.

Though Nana Toku did not elaborate on specific funding sources for these projects, he emphasized that the NDC has a unique approach to governance. “Every government has its own style of implementing projects, and the NDC is no exception. We have a strategy that may differ from others, including international organizations like the IMF or World Bank,” he said.

Nana Toku also expressed confidence in the NDC’s ability to prioritize key projects like the Sekondi market, which has been a long-standing concern for the region. “Our president-elect has assured us that completing ongoing projects is a priority, and with our recent victory in securing 15 seats, we are confident that these projects will be completed,” he said.

Nana Toku reaffirmed the NDC’s commitment to the development of the Western Region. “The development of the Western Region is crucial, and we will continue to remind the president-elect of this. We are determined to fulfill our promises, and the people of the region will soon realize that they made the right choice in supporting the NDC,” he concluded.
