Parliament officially resumes proceedings today, Tuesday, May 27, 2025, signaling the commencement of the Second Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament, following a break during the Easter recess.

In accordance with Order 58 of the Standing Orders of the Parliament of Ghana, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, issued a formal notice on May 12 confirming the return of the House. Parliamentary sittings will begin at 10:00 a.m. at Parliament House in Accra, as lawmakers reconvene to continue their legislative responsibilities.

This resumption heralds the full return of parliamentary business, with members expected to actively participate in lawmaking, committee engagements, policy debates, and the oversight of national governance. One of the most anticipated events on the agenda for this sitting is the presentation of the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review by the Minister for Finance, scheduled for August. This presentation will provide an update on the country’s economic performance and offer policy direction for the remainder of the fiscal year.

Speaking in a pre-sitting interview on Citi FM, Second Deputy Majority Whip Richard Acheampong emphasized the importance and intensity of the legislative calendar for the session. He noted that the period would feature a number of ministerial statements, which are vital for assessing the performance of various government sectors and understanding proposed interventions.

“Ministers will use this opportunity to present statements outlining their achievements from the past quarter and their plans moving forward. We have a full agenda ahead, with the mid-year budget review being a critical highlight in August,” Acheampong stated.

In preparation for this second meeting, the Minority Caucus convened over the weekend for a strategic retreat. The retreat provided a platform for the opposition members to review their activities from the previous session, align on policy positions, and set forth a roadmap for their legislative contributions in the coming months.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, speaking after the retreat, reaffirmed the caucus’s commitment to fulfilling its oversight mandate while continuing to push its broader political vision. He delivered a strong message to both the government and the public, underscoring the Minority’s resolve to act as a vigilant and effective opposition.

“We are prepared to hold the government accountable and ensure transparency in national affairs. At the same time, we want Ghanaians to know that we are positioning ourselves as a credible alternative and are serious about governing come 2028,” Afenyo-Markin declared.

The session is expected to cover a wide array of topics, including economic policy, infrastructure development, social services, and ongoing legislative reforms. Parliamentary committees will resume their work, including reviewing bills, evaluating government programs, and providing reports on national issues.

This meeting also provides newer members of the Ninth Parliament a continued opportunity to deepen their engagement in legislative work and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s governance. Public attention will be focused on how Parliament navigates the key challenges ahead, especially in areas related to economic recovery, youth employment, and public sector accountability.

As Parliament resumes, the expectation is that this session will be dynamic and impactful, setting the stage for the rest of the legislative year. Through robust debate and responsible oversight, MPs are expected to reflect the concerns of their constituents and ensure that national development remains on track.

The Second Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament marks another important chapter in Ghana’s democratic journey, reinforcing the central role of Parliament in shaping policy, promoting accountability, and safeguarding the public interest.
