In a move aimed at restoring structure and class to the much-talked-about Red Carpet experience, Charterhouse, organisers of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs), has announced new access restrictions ahead of the 2025 edition of the event.

Set to take place on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), this year’s ceremony will feature a more refined and exclusive red carpet rollout. For the first time in the award show’s history, access to the main red carpet will be strictly limited to invited celebrities and dignitaries.

The organisers explained that the decision was made to bring “sanity and order” to a segment of the event that has in recent years drawn criticism for being chaotic and poorly managed. According to Charterhouse, there will be two distinct red carpet sessions: one designated for general media engagement and photography, and a second, more exclusive segment meant for television broadcast and fashion-focused interviews.

Only those with formal invitations will be allowed to appear on the televised red carpet, which serves as a key part of the TGMA pre-show experience and sets the tone for the night. This move, organisers say, will help ensure a polished and professional red carpet that meets international standards and reflects the stature of the awards.

The TGMA red carpet has long been a lightning rod for debate. While the awards themselves have grown in prestige and popularity, many industry observers and fans have expressed dissatisfaction with the red carpet’s execution. Critics have often pointed to the presence of underdressed or lesser-known individuals whose inclusion diluted the overall impact of the segment.

Media personality Ola Michael did not hold back last year when he described the 2024 red carpet as disorganized. “It looked more like a marketplace than a high-profile event,” he said, adding that the segment seemed unplanned and lacked proper coordination. According to him, allowing just anyone to walk the carpet without clear guidelines undermined the value of the moment.

Renowned fashion entrepreneur Kofi Okyere Darko (KOD), founder of fashion brand Nineteen57, also weighed in last year. He noted that while the musical performances during the event were impressive, the red carpet left much to be desired. “If you look at other countries on the continent like South Africa and Nigeria, their red carpets are far more curated and impactful,” he wrote in a social media post.

Charterhouse appears to have taken such feedback seriously. By tightening access and formalising the invitation process, the organisers are hoping to raise the standard of red carpet appearances, ensure a more seamless experience for viewers, and create a space that truly celebrates the glamour of the music industry.

“This is part of a broader effort to enhance the image and professionalism of the TGMA brand,” a Charterhouse representative noted. “We want the red carpet to reflect the excellence and creativity of the Ghanaian music scene, not detract from it.”

The new directive is expected to significantly change the tone and pace of the pre-show activities. It also signals a broader cultural shift as event organisers across Africa move toward more curated and intentional productions.

With these changes in place, fans and critics alike will be watching closely to see if the 2025 edition of the TGMAs delivers a red carpet that lives up to the glamour and excitement of the awards themselves.
