The Ashanti Regional branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has extended heartfelt condolences to the leadership and members of the Obogu Saviour Church in the Asante Akim South Municipality, following the tragic loss of 16 children during a recent devastating incident.

Led by key regional executives, the NPP delegation visited the grieving community to express their sympathies and stand in solidarity with the families and church members affected by the heartbreaking event. The atmosphere was deeply emotional as parents, relatives, and members of the congregation recounted the incident, which has left the entire town in shock and mourning.

According to community leaders, the children, all members of the church’s Sunday school, lost their lives when they were caught in a sudden flood while returning from a church event. The incident, which occurred after heavy rainfall, is one of the most tragic disasters in the area’s recent history and has drawn attention to the urgent need for improved safety infrastructure in flood-prone regions.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, in his remarks, described the incident as “a devastating blow not just to the Obogu community, but to the entire region and nation.” He emphasized the importance of coming together during such times of loss, regardless of political or religious affiliation.

“This is not just the pain of Obogu; it is a collective national tragedy,” he said. “We have come here not as politicians, but as fellow Ghanaians, as parents, and as brothers and sisters who share in your pain. No words can replace the young lives lost, but we hope our presence brings some comfort.”

He also assured the community that the NPP would engage with government agencies and relevant stakeholders to ensure that the affected families receive the necessary support, and that long-term measures are put in place to prevent similar disasters in the future.

Community elders, pastors, and grieving parents expressed their gratitude for the visit and support, noting that in such times of sorrow, solidarity and empathy from the wider Ghanaian community are deeply needed. Some of the bereaved families also called on authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and to implement flood prevention measures in the area.

In addition to offering words of comfort, the NPP delegation donated essential supplies and financial assistance to the affected families and church to support them during this difficult time.

The Obogu tragedy has reignited conversations about disaster preparedness and the vulnerability of rural communities to climate-related events. Civil society organizations and concerned citizens have since called for a coordinated national response to improve drainage systems, early warning systems, and public safety education—especially for children.

As Obogu mourns, the nation watches with sorrow and reflection, reminded of the fragility of life and the need for compassion, preparedness, and unity in the face of tragedy.
