NPP Demands Action Against Sammy Gyamfi, Says Code of Conduct at Risk

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is calling on President John Dramani Mahama to uphold the integrity of the recently introduced Code of Conduct for government appointees by taking decisive action against Sammy Gyamfi, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board. This follows allegations that Gyamfi distributed US dollars to Nana Agradaa, an act the NPP deems a serious breach of both legal and ethical standards.
At a press conference held on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at the party’s headquarters in Accra, NPP National Organizer Henry Nana Boakye condemned Gyamfi’s actions, asserting that they contravene the Foreign Exchange Act, the Anti-Money Laundering Act, and the principles enshrined in the Code of Conduct. Boakye emphasized that such behavior undermines the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
“Sammy Gyamfi’s conduct is a blatant disregard for the laws of the land and the ethical standards expected of public officials,” Boakye stated. “If President Mahama fails to take appropriate action, it will render the Code of Conduct meaningless.”
The NPP further argued that Gyamfi’s alleged actions reflect a lack of confidence in the Ghanaian cedi, the nation’s sole legal tender. The party highlighted that the Bank of Ghana has consistently warned against the unauthorized use of foreign currency in domestic transactions, underscoring the importance of adhering to these regulations to maintain economic stability.
“It is particularly concerning that the CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, an institution established to stabilize the cedi through strategic gold reserves, is reportedly engaging in practices that undermine the very currency he is tasked with protecting,” Boakye remarked.
Additionally, the NPP raised questions about the source of Gyamfi’s wealth, noting that President Mahama has acknowledged that many appointees have not received their salaries since taking office. The party called for a thorough investigation into Gyamfi’s financial activities and asset acquisitions during his tenure.
“Given the substantial salary and benefits associated with his position, it is imperative to ascertain the source of the funds he possesses,” Boakye asserted. “A comprehensive investigation is necessary to ensure transparency and accountability.”
The NPP concluded by urging President Mahama to suspend Gyamfi from his role pending a full investigation by relevant authorities. The party emphasized that swift and decisive action is essential to uphold the rule of law and restore public trust in government institutions.
“Failure to act decisively will not only tarnish the reputation of the Ghana Gold Board but also send a troubling message about the government’s commitment to ethical governance,” Boakye warned. “We call on President Mahama to demonstrate leadership and take the necessary steps to address this serious issue.”
In response to the NPP’s allegations, Sammy Gyamfi has denied any wrongdoing and dismissed the claims as politically motivated attacks. He has yet to publicly address the specific allegations regarding the distribution of foreign currency.
As the situation develops, all eyes are on President Mahama to see how he will respond to the NPP’s call for action and whether he will enforce the Code of Conduct to its fullest extent.
