The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned the post-election violence that has erupted in various parts of the country following the 2024 elections. The party expressed its deep concern over the disturbances, which it believes are not spontaneous but may be part of a more orchestrated effort involving some political figures. During a press conference on December 12, 2024, the Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to take immediate action and reign in its supporters to prevent further chaos and violence.

Afenyo-Markin was clear in his condemnation of the actions of certain individuals and groups, particularly some Members of Parliament (MPs) from the NDC. He alleged that these MPs had been promised key positions in the incoming government, which he believes may have played a role in their involvement in the violence. The NPP official emphasized that the unrest appeared to be coordinated and led by people with political interests rather than spontaneous reactions from the public.

Afenyo-Markin further challenged the leadership of the NDC, particularly President-elect John Dramani Mahama, to take responsibility and act swiftly to stop the violence. He urged Mahama to demonstrate his love and commitment to the country by taking immediate steps to end the violence and restore order. “The President-elect should demonstrate his love for this country by taking decisive steps to stop these actions immediately,” Afenyo-Markin urged.

One of the key points raised by Afenyo-Markin during the press conference was the question of what the NDC’s response would have been had the election results favored them. He raised concerns about the possibility that the NDC was already preparing for unrest and chaos in the event of a loss. “Had the NDC lost the election, what would their response have been?” he questioned. “Is this evidence that the leadership of the party had already prepared for, and perhaps even rehearsed, chaos in the event of a defeat?” This statement suggested that the NPP believes the NDC was perhaps already anticipating turmoil following a potential loss, which may have influenced the violent incidents that have unfolded.

The NPP also highlighted the need for the country to prioritize peace, especially after reports of attacks on individuals, violence, and the vandalism of state property in several areas. The party emphasized that the ongoing disturbances undermine the democratic process and the rule of law, which are vital to the nation’s stability. Afenyo-Markin expressed his belief that peace must be restored as soon as possible to allow for the proper functioning of the country’s democratic institutions.

In light of the violence, the NPP has called on all political leaders, particularly those in the NDC, to act with maturity and responsibility. The NPP has reiterated that the election is over and the democratic process must be respected, with all sides working to preserve peace and harmony. The NPP also reminded the public that any actions that threaten the peace and safety of citizens must not be tolerated and that those responsible for violence should be held accountable.

As the violence continues to spread in various regions, the NPP has urged the government and law enforcement agencies to ensure that lawbreakers face the full consequences of their actions. The party has expressed hope that the situation will not escalate further and that the leadership of the NDC will take decisive steps to end the chaos.

Afenyo-Markin concluded his statement by emphasizing that the country’s future must be built on peace, cooperation, and respect for democratic principles. He reminded the public that while political differences are inevitable, they should never be allowed to spiral into violence or anarchy. The NPP remains committed to ensuring that Ghana remains a peaceful and stable nation, where the rule of law is upheld and all citizens can live in harmony.
