The National Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a heartfelt and urgent appeal to members and supporters of the party, urging them to halt any campaigning for internal positions within the party. This request comes after the NPP suffered a significant political defeat in the December 7, 2024 general elections, losing both the parliamentary majority and the presidential race.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the NPP Council of Elders, Mr. Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, the council expressed deep concern over the ongoing internal campaigns being led by certain party executives, members, and sympathizers. The council emphasized that these activities are hindering the party’s ability to focus on its crucial task of rebuilding and revitalizing its structures and support base after the electoral loss.

“The elders of the Party are deeply concerned about this development and wish to appeal to all our members and supporters to refrain from engaging in activities that detract from our efforts to rebuild and strengthen the party in the aftermath of our disappointing performance in the 2024 elections,” the statement read.

The council called for a period of reflection and sober evaluation of the party’s recent electoral outcomes, stressing that now is the time for the NPP to examine and learn from its mistakes rather than engage in internal competition. The NPP has already established an Election Review Committee, which will be chaired by Professor Mike Oquaye. The committee’s mandate is to conduct a thorough review of the party’s electoral performance, engaging with party members, stakeholders, and the broader public to identify the underlying causes of the party’s defeat.

“The committee will assess all aspects of the party’s campaign, organizational structure, and electoral strategies. It will also consult with relevant stakeholders to uncover the root causes of our loss,” the statement added. The committee is expected to submit its findings and recommendations within three months, providing an opportunity for the party to take corrective actions.

The council made it clear that the time for internal elections and contests for positions within the party would come later. For now, it is critical that the party focuses on rebuilding and re-energizing its leadership and structure. “The time for internal competition will come in due course. However, the focus at this moment should be on rebuilding the party and ensuring that we are prepared to face the challenges ahead,” the council emphasized.

The NPP’s loss in the 2024 general elections marks a significant setback for the party, which had previously enjoyed control of the presidency and the parliamentary majority. This defeat has left the party facing a period of uncertainty, with its leadership needing to assess the situation carefully and take the necessary steps to regain the trust and confidence of the electorate.

Despite the challenges, the council expressed optimism about the NPP’s ability to recover. Drawing on the party’s past successes in overcoming political difficulties, the council urged members to remain united and focused on the task of rebuilding. “We have faced adversity before and come out stronger, and with God’s guidance and our collective determination, we can do so again,” the statement concluded.

The NPP Council of Elders’ appeal comes at a time when the party is facing significant internal division and external pressure. Many party members are anxious to secure positions within the party in the aftermath of the election loss, which has contributed to the ongoing internal campaigns. The council’s message serves as a reminder that the party’s primary focus should be on addressing its electoral failures and re-establishing itself as a strong and united political force in the country.

The NPP Council of Elders has called for a pause on internal campaigning and emphasized the need for reflection, unity, and strategic planning. The appeal underscores the importance of focusing on rebuilding the party’s structure and ensuring it is ready to meet future political challenges. The creation of the Election Review Committee is a crucial step in this process, and its findings will be instrumental in guiding the NPP’s efforts to regain the support of the electorate and strengthen its position in Ghana’s political landscape.
