NPP’s Appiah Andy Kubi Reportedly ‘Poisoned’
The Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has recounted the severe consequences he faced after taking a bold stance against a member of his own party.
He stated that this move nearly cost him his life.
The outgoing legislator was a leading figure in the #KenMustGo campaign, which called for the resignation of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta amidst Ghana’s economic challenges.
In an interview on JoyNews’ Upfront, Mr. Appiah-Kubi revealed that his involvement in the campaign, alongside around 80 New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs, subjected him to “punishment,” including an alleged poisoning incident.
He detailed the ordeal, describing attempts by certain individuals to transfer him from the hospital where he was receiving treatment to Accra, a move his wife vehemently opposed to ensure his safety.
“My own government pursued me in various ways after our advocacy, and that is a fact. Let me put it on record today that my life was in danger at some point, and I suffered from an ailment during that period. I was treated, and I am fortunate to be alive. I thank God for that,” he stated.
The MP’s disclosure sheds light on the personal risks and political fallout faced by those who challenge party leadership.
“Some people talk about it in the press in exaggerated terms, but I suffered pain. I received treatment over time and was healed by a miracle of God. So, I have a history that makes me very cautious now.
I was careless for a brief period, but that won’t happen again because I am more careful now. I also thank the American institutions for providing me with some level of security support,” he stated.
He further explained, “There were attempts to lift me out of the hospital and bring me to Accra, but we were warned not to use that means of travel. My wife decided against it.
At that time, I couldn’t care for myself because I wasn’t conscious enough, but my wife refused the offer to transfer me. So, I remained there for about seven days, and somehow, God worked miraculously, and I don’t know how I made it out.”
Mr. Appiah-Kubi stated that his doctor had told him he had suffered from poisoning and added that he has since been more vigilant.
“Well, I was informed that I had some form of poisoning. When you attempt to attack people’s integrity, it’s a dangerous enterprise, so you must be careful. I have always been cautious.
If you ask my personal assistant, he will tell you that I don’t even eat from outside. I only did so on one occasion,” he added.
Mr. Appiah-Kubi has attributed the party’s defeat at the polls to President Akufo-Addo’s recalcitrant posture.
