Presec-Legon Retains Top Position in 2024 NSMQ Rankings as Top 100 SHSs Unveiled – Complete List

The 2024 EN Analytics Top 100 Senior High School Rankings for the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) have been officially released, with Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (Presec-Legon) continuing to dominate the rankings for the second consecutive year. The rankings assess schools based on their performance in the NSMQ national competition, considering a variety of factors including their final standing in the competition, classification in different categories, and their historical performance over the past 12 years.
Presec-Legon remains at the top of the rankings with a solid score of 690 points, maintaining the position it secured in 2023. Prempeh College follows in second place with 620 points, holding onto its previous ranking from the prior year. Adisadel College also retains its position in third place, amassing 572 points. Mfantsipim School, thanks to an exceptional performance in the 2024 NSMQ, moves up from fifth place to fourth with 515 points. On the other hand, Opoku Ware School experiences a slight drop, moving from fourth to fifth place with 470 points.
Keta Senior High Technical School (KETASCO) remains firmly in sixth place with 462.5 points, while St. Peter’s Senior High School secures the seventh spot with 380 points. St. Augustine’s College, meanwhile, makes a significant leap, jumping from twelfth to eighth place with 345 points.
Accra Academy remains in its ninth-place position with 345 points, and St. Thomas Aquinas Senior High School experiences a slight dip, dropping to tenth place with 344 points.
In the 2024 NSMQ competition, Mfantsipim School emerged victorious, clinching the trophy after defeating top contenders including Prempeh College, Presec-Legon, and St. Augustine’s College. Their triumph propelled them up to fourth place in the overall rankings. St. Augustine’s College also made history by securing a top-10 ranking for the first time since 2021, finishing eighth overall and third regionally in the Central Region.
The Central Region demonstrated its strength in this year’s NSMQ, with six schools reaching the quarter-finals, four making it to the semi-finals, and two—Mfantsipim School and St. Augustine’s College—advancing all the way to the finals. This impressive performance highlights the region’s rising prominence in science and mathematics education.
Apam Senior High School made the most remarkable progress in the rankings, soaring 19 places from 71st in 2023 to 52nd in 2024. Mpraeso Senior High School also showed significant improvement, climbing from 84th to 70th, while St. John’s School, Sekondi, moved up from 65th to 52nd.
However, there are still significant regional disparities in the rankings. Schools from newly created regions such as Ahafo, North East, Savannah, and Western North have yet to break into the top 100, a reflection of ongoing challenges in these areas, particularly related to infrastructure, resources, and access to quality education. These challenges remain a major barrier to the development of science and mathematics education in these regions, and addressing them will be essential for improving their future performance in the NSMQ.
Despite these disparities, the 2024 NSMQ rankings paint an encouraging picture of the growing competition and rising standards of science and mathematics education across the country. The performance of schools like Mfantsipim School and St. Augustine’s College demonstrates the potential for academic excellence in Ghana, and the continued dominance of schools such as Presec-Legon and Prempeh College reflects the sustained strength of traditional academic powerhouses.
Looking forward, the rankings also underscore the importance of supporting and investing in schools from underrepresented regions to level the playing field. With increased resources and targeted interventions, schools from all regions of Ghana have the potential to rise in the rankings and contribute to the overall growth of science and mathematics education in the country.
