President Mahama Commits to Economic Revitalization of Northern Region

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his determination to bring about economic transformation in the Northern Region, promising significant investments in key sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, and energy to unlock the region’s untapped potential.

During his thank-you tour, Mahama addressed the people of the Northern Region at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi, underscoring the region’s vital role in Ghana’s broader economic revival. He reminded the audience of how General Kutu Acheampong, a former Head of State, had once described the region as the “Granary of Ghana,” highlighting its historical significance in the country’s agricultural landscape.

“The Northern Region is blessed with fertile land and a hardworking population. With the right investments in irrigation systems and modern farming methods, we can transform this region into the agricultural heart of Ghana,” Mahama stated, emphasizing the region’s capacity to drive the country’s agricultural output.

Agricultural Development and Economic Growth A central part of Mahama’s vision for the region is the revitalization of its agricultural sector. He outlined his administration’s plans to boost food production through comprehensive irrigation projects designed to mitigate the challenges posed by climate change. Recognizing the importance of modernizing farming techniques, Mahama committed to prioritizing agribusiness, mechanization, and innovation in agriculture to not only increase food production but also create sustainable job opportunities for the region’s youth.

The President stressed that a thriving agricultural sector would be a key driver of broader economic growth, creating long-term stability for communities across the Northern Region. By focusing on youth employment and making farming more efficient and profitable, Mahama aims to reverse the trend of rural-to-urban migration, offering young people in the Northern Region viable career options within their communities.

Infrastructure Development for Progress In addition to agriculture, Mahama outlined several ambitious infrastructure projects aimed at addressing some of the region’s longstanding challenges. One of the most important initiatives is the completion of the Yendi Hospital, a long-delayed project that has been a source of frustration for locals. Mahama emphasized that once completed, the hospital would significantly improve healthcare access for residents, providing essential medical services that have been lacking in the region for years.

Moreover, the President announced plans to modernize healthcare facilities in Tamale, the capital of the Northern Region, to improve healthcare delivery for its rapidly growing population. These developments are part of a broader commitment to improving the quality of life for people in the Northern Region by ensuring that they have access to vital services, including healthcare.

To address the chronic water shortages in the area, Mahama introduced an innovative water supply initiative that will draw water from Yapei to serve not just Yendi but also Tamale and surrounding communities. This project aims to ensure that residents have reliable access to clean water, a basic necessity that has been scarce in many parts of the region.

On the energy front, Mahama disclosed plans for the establishment of a new power supply point along the Eastern Corridor to stabilize electricity delivery in regions like Yendi, Bimbilla, and other surrounding towns. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to ensure that the Northern Region benefits from a more stable and consistent energy supply, which is crucial for industrial development and day-to-day activities.

Commitment to National Growth and Governance While acknowledging the economic challenges facing Ghana, President Mahama remained optimistic about the ability of his administration to address these difficulties. He described governance as a demanding process, particularly following elections, but expressed confidence that his team, which includes a mix of young, talented individuals, would successfully steer the nation toward recovery and prosperity.

“We have assembled a capable and dynamic team that is ready to move the country forward,” Mahama said, stressing the importance of strong leadership in overcoming the challenges the nation faces.

The President also reiterated his commitment to fulfilling key campaign promises, including reducing the cost of the Hajj pilgrimage and introducing an additional public holiday for Eid celebrations.
