Safety of Players and Fans Takes Precedence Over Victory – Dr. Kyei

Nations FC’s recent fixture against Basake Holy Stars at the Ampain AAK II Arena on Matchday 33 ended in chaos and controversy, overshadowed by violence and a dramatic walk-off by the visiting side. The clash, which was meant to be a routine Premier League encounter, quickly deteriorated following disputed penalty decisions that ignited tensions on and off the pitch.
In protest against what they viewed as unfair officiating favoring the home team, Nations FC players rushed onto the field, leading to a stoppage of the match. Matters worsened when Dr. Kwame Kyei, the club chairman, and his son Divine Kyei—who is also the club president—were attacked amidst the unrest. The assault on the club’s leadership compelled Nations FC to withdraw from the game entirely.
Speaking to Asempa FM, Dr. Kyei expressed his profound disappointment over the incident and highlighted the importance of safety above sporting results.
“I have never experienced anything like what happened in Ayinase,” he remarked. “Winning a league title means nothing if it costs lives. I am prepared to accept a points deduction or even lose the championship if it means protecting the well-being of my players and fans.”
Dr. Kyei further explained that the club’s supporters had been barred from entering the stadium, a factor he believes contributed to the hostile environment. He also referenced a recent tragedy where a fan lost their life, stressing his commitment to preventing any repeat of such incidents.
“Our fans weren’t allowed into the stadium, and with recent events where a fan died due to violence, I refuse to risk the safety of anyone connected to the club,” he said firmly.
Despite the disruption, Nations FC remain atop the Ghana Premier League table with 60 points as the season nears its conclusion. However, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has yet to make an official statement regarding the violent episode or the resulting abandonment of the match.
The incident has drawn widespread attention, with many praising Dr. Kyei’s strong moral stance on prioritizing human life over competition. It has also intensified calls for the GFA to take decisive action to enhance stadium security and improve officiating standards to safeguard all participants in the sport.
This episode adds to ongoing concerns about safety and fairness within Ghana’s domestic football scene. For Dr. Kwame Kyei, the message is unambiguous: no trophy or league points can outweigh the value of human life.
