Samuel Nartey George, the Minister-designate for Communications, Digitalisation, and Innovation, has committed to overseeing a well-organized and efficient SIM card re-registration process, promising to eliminate the long queues that marred previous registration drives.

During his vetting by the Appointments Committee on January 30, 2025, Sam George laid out his vision for a revamped SIM card registration process. He emphasized that under his leadership, the re-registration would be streamlined and would no longer be a hassle for Ghanaians.

The Ningo Prampram Member of Parliament (MP) acknowledged the frustrations that past SIM registration exercises had caused, especially with the long queues that lasted for hours. He recognized that the previous approach was ineffective and pledged to take a more logical and efficient approach. “We will ensure a proper SIM re-registration process, and this time, there will be no queues. Common sense will prevail, and we will make use of technology to streamline the process,” he stated with confidence.

Sam George stressed that the new re-registration process would be designed with the best interests of Ghanaians in mind. He underscored the importance of making the process as convenient as possible while ensuring the security and reliability of the country’s telecommunication services. The minister-designate emphasized that the use of technology would play a crucial role in facilitating a smoother process, enabling Ghanaians to easily and efficiently update their SIM cards.

Another key point Sam George raised was the importance of national security. He noted that a proper SIM card registration system would help mitigate fraudulent activities and ensure that telecommunications networks operate securely. He also highlighted the benefits of a digitized approach to SIM registration, which could assist in creating a more secure communications environment for the country.

The Minister-designate’s assurances came in light of past criticisms regarding the inefficiencies in the previous SIM card re-registration process. Sam George expressed his intention to address these challenges head-on by using more advanced technological solutions. By embracing innovation, he believes the process can be made more efficient, reducing unnecessary delays and making the system work more smoothly for everyone.

He also committed to ensuring that the re-registration process is inclusive and accessible to all Ghanaians, including those in remote areas who previously faced challenges in registering their SIM cards. Sam George emphasized that inclusivity and accessibility would be central to his efforts to overhaul the SIM card registration process. The intention is to reach every corner of the country and allow every citizen to participate in the process without having to endure long waits or cumbersome procedures.

Looking beyond SIM registration, Sam George also laid out his broader vision for Ghana’s digital infrastructure. He promised to prioritize innovation within the communications sector, leveraging digital solutions to modernize and improve the quality of telecom services in Ghana. Under his leadership, the ministry will focus on implementing policies that enhance the telecommunications system’s functionality and secure reliable access to communication for all citizens.

Sam George also made it clear that national security would remain a top priority. He emphasized that a more efficient SIM re-registration process would not only make telecommunications more accessible but would also contribute to national security by minimizing fraudulent activities linked to improper SIM card registration.

Samuel Nartey George assured the Appointments Committee that if confirmed, he would lead the ministry with a focus on efficiency, technological innovation, and inclusivity. His vision is to create a more effective telecommunications infrastructure that benefits all Ghanaians and ensures their communication services are secure and reliable.
