Member of Parliament for Akuapim North and prominent figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku, has thrown his full support behind Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describing him as the party’s most promising candidate to lead them to victory in the 2028 general elections.

Speaking in an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Thursday, June 19, Awuku highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s exceptional leadership qualities, resilience, and unwavering integrity as key reasons why he believes the former Vice President is best positioned to lead the NPP in the next presidential contest.

According to Awuku, Bawumia’s handling of the country’s affairs during a period of major economic disruption—both globally and locally—demonstrated his competence under pressure. He pointed specifically to the post-COVID economic landscape and the cascading effects of global inflation and supply chain shocks, which impacted Ghana as well as other developing economies.

“Dr. Bawumia presents a strong, credible, and inspiring option for the New Patriotic Party going into 2028,” Awuku stated. “Some of us have no doubt that, despite the hardships and criticism faced during the last few years, particularly after the pandemic and amid global economic shocks, he held the line and performed admirably.”

Awuku emphasized that Bawumia not only navigated challenging times as Vice President but also stood firmly in support of the party’s values and policies. “He stood in the gap when things were tough. He didn’t shy away. He faced it all head-on,” he added.

Beyond economic stewardship, the Akuapim North legislator pointed to Bawumia’s personal character as a key factor behind his endorsement. He described the former Vice President as a man of principle and vision, whose integrity and calm demeanor set him apart.

“I believe in his personal achievements, his intellect, and most importantly, his integrity. He has proven over the years that he is not just a technocrat but a political leader with the strength of character needed to unify the party and win the support of the Ghanaian electorate,” Awuku said.

Awuku’s endorsement reflects growing momentum within the NPP around Bawumia’s potential return as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 elections. While some political observers have debated the implications of the NPP’s recent performance in the 2024 elections, others within the party see Bawumia as the bridge between the party’s traditional base and a new generation of voters.

Many analysts also believe that Bawumia’s background as an economist and his extensive public service record could play a critical role in addressing the country’s long-term development needs and reassuring the business community.

“He embodies the kind of leadership that Ghana needs going forward—a modern, solutions-oriented thinker who understands both the local and global dynamics,” Awuku stressed. “He is deeply committed to Ghana’s progress and has the experience to back that up.”

While Dr. Bawumia has yet to officially declare his intentions for 2028, his continued involvement in national discourse and his wide appeal across regions and demographics make him a strong contender should he choose to run again.

As discussions begin to take shape around the future of the NPP and its direction post-2024, voices like Sammi Awuku’s are likely to play a crucial role in shaping party consensus. For now, he remains unwavering in his belief that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is not just a former Vice President—but the party’s best hope for reclaiming power in the next electoral cycle.
