Sammi Awuku, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Akuapem North, has called the 2024 election a pivotal moment for Ghana, describing it as a choice between the country’s past and its future. In a recent interview with Joy News, Awuku drew a sharp distinction between the two leading candidates for president: Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP and John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Awuku argued that voting for Mahama would be a step backward, representing a return to the past. He pointed out that if Mahama were to be elected, he would be limited to just one term, which would eliminate any accountability to the electorate, as he would not have the opportunity to seek re-election. “This election is a choice between the past and the future,” Awuku emphasized. “A vote for Mahama is a vote for a leader who will only serve one term and will not be held accountable to the people after that term ends. He won’t have the opportunity to come back and address the needs of the people.”

In contrast, Awuku stressed that voting for Dr. Bawumia would represent a choice for a better future. He highlighted that Bawumia’s policies, if successfully implemented, would likely secure a second term, allowing for continued progress and sustained accountability. “The future lies with Dr. Bawumia,” Awuku said, “and the bold solutions he offers for the country’s development. If he becomes president and meets the expectations of the people, he will have the opportunity to return for a second term, ensuring that his work continues and that the country moves forward.”

Addressing the country’s current economic challenges, Awuku acknowledged that Ghana, like many other nations, has faced difficulties, particularly in the wake of the global economic downturn and the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these challenges, he insisted that the NPP government has continued to prioritize the needs of Ghanaians and provide support to the people in these trying times. He noted that global economic struggles have affected countries worldwide, not just Ghana.

Awuku explained that while the country has faced setbacks, every year brings its own set of unique challenges, and no government is immune to these issues. He pointed out that throughout Ghana’s history, no one has ever claimed that times had not been tough, but he also highlighted that challenges have always been a part of governance. “There has never been a time in Ghana’s history when someone could say things were always better than they were before. Every year comes with new challenges. But we must also recognize that the difficulties we face today are not limited to Ghana; the world is facing similar issues,” he said.

He urged Ghanaians to reflect on the progress made under the Akufo-Addo administration, which, despite the global economic turmoil, has managed to continue supporting the nation’s growth and development. Awuku encouraged voters to keep in mind the progress that has been made over the past few years and to cast their ballots in favor of Dr. Bawumia, who, he believes, has the right leadership qualities to steer Ghana towards a more prosperous future.

Awuku’s message was clear: the 2024 election represents a critical choice for Ghana’s future. He positioned Dr. Bawumia as the candidate who embodies the path forward, offering a vision of continued growth and transformation. By contrast, he warned that voting for Mahama would take the country back to the past, where accountability and progress would be limited. He urged Ghanaians to make a choice that would secure the future of their nation by supporting the candidate who represents growth, accountability, and positive change.
