Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is currently in an induced coma after undergoing emergency abdominal surgery following a serious injury sustained in Sunday’s Premier League draw against Leicester City.

The 27-year-old Nigerian forward suffered a ruptured intestine after a collision with the goalpost during the 2-2 draw. Despite appearing to be in significant pain, Awoniyi attempted to continue playing after receiving medical treatment on the pitch. It was only later, following further assessment by Forest’s medical staff on Monday evening, that the full extent of the injury was discovered, prompting urgent hospitalisation.

He underwent emergency surgery on Tuesday to address the damage. Medical professionals later placed him in an induced coma—not due to life-threatening complications, but to help stabilize his condition, reduce physical movement, and manage his heart rate during recovery.

Forest issued a statement confirming that Awoniyi is “recovering well so far” following the operation and remains under close medical supervision.

However, the incident has led to internal tension at the club. Club owner Evangelos Marinakis was seen entering the pitch after the final whistle to speak with head coach Nuno Espírito Santo, sparking speculation about a confrontation. Forest has since addressed the matter in a strongly worded statement, clarifying that there was no dispute between the owner and coaching staff.

“The truth is there was no confrontation with Nuno or anyone else,” the statement read. “What occurred was shared frustration that the medical team allowed Awoniyi to continue playing after the injury. That decision should not have been made.”

The club’s comments reflect growing concerns about player safety and the responsibility of medical teams to make immediate, cautious decisions during matches. An internal review of the club’s medical protocols is expected in the coming weeks.

Awoniyi, a key figure in Forest’s attack, now faces a significant recovery period and is expected to miss the remainder of the season. His absence is a blow to Forest’s campaign, as the team continues to fight for European qualification.

Support has poured in from fans, teammates, and across the football community, all wishing Awoniyi a swift and full recovery as he begins a challenging road back to health.
