Award-winning Ghanaian musician, Stonebwoy, has paid a deeply personal and emotional tribute to the victims of the recent military helicopter crash, describing the incident as a devastating moment for Ghana. In an interview with TV3 on August 7, 2025, the artist revealed his close ties with some of the deceased, calling the tragedy not just a national loss, but a personal one as well.

Stonebwoy, known for his vocal advocacy and emotional depth, said he was particularly shaken by the deaths of Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for the Environment, and Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator. Both men, he said, were not only prominent public figures but had become fatherly influences in his life.

“It’s difficult to process,” Stonebwoy said somberly. “We’re all still in shock. Honourable Murtala was more than a fan — he was like a father figure. And the same goes for Alhaji Muniru. These were not just acquaintances; they were people I shared personal connections with.”

The musician recalled the unwavering support he had received from both men, particularly Murtala Mohammed, who he said had publicly expressed admiration for his music and journey.

“We didn’t meet often, but we talked a lot. One time he was on air and showed love for me, for Stonebwoy as a brand, and the music I represent,” Stonebwoy recounted. “It meant so much to hear that from someone of his stature — a politician who appreciated reggae and dancehall, and supported young people doing great things.”

The crash, which claimed the lives of multiple high-ranking government officials, has plunged the nation into mourning. For Stonebwoy, the grief has been compounded by personal reflection, as the tragedy coincided with the 10th anniversary of his mother’s death, a moment that had already put him in a reflective and emotional state.

“This month is heavy for me,” he admitted. “Ten years ago, I lost my mother in August. So I was already feeling the weight of that memory, and then this tragedy hit. It’s been overwhelming.”

While extending his condolences to the bereaved families, Stonebwoy also called on the government and relevant authorities to take swift action to prevent similar incidents in the future. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of those who serve the nation at the highest levels.

“We’ve lost great people — not just to their families, but to the country. This can’t just pass as another sad moment. There has to be a serious conversation about aviation safety and national emergency preparedness. We can’t continue to lose lives this way.”

Stonebwoy concluded his remarks by emphasizing the need for compassion and collective healing, encouraging Ghanaians to come together in support of the families affected and to honour the legacies of those who perished.

“This is a moment for unity, reflection, and real change,” he said.
