Transport Operators Association Implements 15% Fare Increase

The Transport Operators Association of Ghana has announced a 15% increase in transport fares, set to take effect on Thursday, December 5, 2024. The association attributes the fare hike to the ongoing rise in fuel prices and other increasing operational costs that have made it challenging to maintain existing fare rates.
In an official statement released on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, the association explained that the decision to raise fares was not taken lightly but was necessary for the continued operation of transport services in the country. The statement clarified that the rise in fuel prices and operational expenses had made it unsustainable for transport operators to maintain the current fare levels.
The statement expressed that the 15% increase would allow transport operators to cover the increased costs of doing business and continue to provide safe and reliable services to the public. The association also acknowledged that the adjustment would place an additional financial burden on commuters, but emphasized that it was essential for the long-term sustainability of the transport sector.
“We kindly appeal to the public to bear with us during this challenging period, as this adjustment is critical to ensure the viability of our operations and continued service delivery,” the statement read. It further stressed that the decision was made after careful consideration of the rising costs faced by transport operators, which include not only fuel prices but also maintenance costs, insurance, and other operational expenses.
Along with the fare increase, the Transport Operators Association also took the opportunity to issue a warning to its members. The association cautioned drivers not to give in to any intimidation or pressure from individuals or groups seeking to prevent the implementation of the fare increase. The statement referred to past instances where some leadership members of the association had been influenced by government officials or external parties to reverse fare hikes, but this time, the association reaffirmed its commitment to the decision.
“In the past, certain leadership members from our umbrella organizations have allowed government officials to influence the withdrawal of fare adjustments. However, we are resolute in our decision this time around,” the association stated. The statement highlighted the importance of standing firm on the decision to ensure that the transport sector can continue to function without compromising service quality or operator sustainability.
The Transport Operators Association also made a call for broader public support for the fare adjustment. It urged Ghanaians to understand the economic context in which the decision was made and to recognize the importance of a sustainable transport system in light of the prevailing economic conditions. The association stressed that the increase was not intended to exploit commuters but was a necessary step to keep the transport sector operational and ensure that drivers can maintain their vehicles, pay staff, and meet other operational needs.
Finally, the association encouraged all Ghanaians to participate in the upcoming general elections on December 7, 2024, and to do so peacefully. The statement called for unity and peace during the election period, urging all citizens to contribute to a smooth and peaceful election process. The association emphasized the importance of upholding peace and unity in the country during what is expected to be a highly anticipated election.
The statement concluded with a message of gratitude for the public’s understanding and cooperation during this difficult time. It was signed by key members of the association, including Paa Willie (National Chairman of C-DAG), Nana Wiredu (Deputy Secretary), David Agboado (PRO, Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana), and Yaw Barimah (PRO, True Drivers Union).
In summary, while the 15% fare increase may be a significant burden for many commuters, it has been deemed necessary by the Transport Operators Association to help sustain the transport sector amid rising operational costs. The association has called on both the public and its members to support the decision and work together for a better, more sustainable future for the transport industry in Ghana.
