A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson following a fire at a private residence belonging to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, police confirmed on Tuesday. The Metropolitan Police said the arrest is part of a wider investigation into a series of recent fires in north London, which are now being handled by counter-terrorism officers due to the involvement of a senior government figure.

Emergency services were called in the early hours of Monday morning to a property in Kentish Town, the neighborhood Starmer represents as an MP. The fire, which damaged the entrance of the house, did not cause any injuries. Authorities have not confirmed whether anyone was inside the home at the time.

The suspect was taken into custody early Tuesday and is being held on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. Police believe the incident may be connected to two other fires in the area: one at another residential address in nearby Islington on Sunday, and a vehicle fire in Kentish Town last Thursday.

According to a BBC report, the Islington address is also linked to the prime minister. Starmer lived in the Kentish Town home with his wife and children before moving into 10 Downing Street following his appointment as prime minister in July last year.

Because of the links to Starmer, the investigation is now being led by officers from the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command. A spokesperson said the decision reflects the high-profile nature of the individual involved, but that investigators are “keeping an open mind” about the motive.

“We are treating these incidents with the utmost seriousness, given the potential threat to life and the involvement of a senior public figure,” the spokesperson added.

The prime minister’s office issued a short statement thanking emergency personnel for their prompt response. “We are grateful to the police and fire services for their swift action and continued efforts to ensure the safety of the prime minister and his family,” the spokesperson said.

While officials have not suggested a specific motive, the targeting of addresses connected to a sitting prime minister has prompted concern about the safety of elected officials and the security of their private residences. Security measures for political figures are typically confidential, but these events may lead to a broader reassessment.

The Metropolitan Police said they are actively investigating whether the three fires are linked and have asked the public to come forward with any information. CCTV footage and eyewitness reports are being reviewed as part of the ongoing inquiry.

The suspect remains in custody while officers continue their investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.

This incident adds to growing concerns in the UK over the safety of public officials amid increasing reports of threats and politically motivated violence. Authorities have emphasized that any attempt to intimidate or harm elected representatives will be met with a full and robust response.
