The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has confirmed receiving GH¢35 million from the Ministry of Education to assist with the processing of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results for school candidates. This funding is part of efforts to ensure the completion of the scanning of objective answer sheets and finalize the results for candidates.

With this latest allocation, the total amount of funds received by WAEC from the Ministry of Education has now reached GH¢60 million, out of a total GH¢118 million owed to the Council. Earlier, on December 18, 2024, the Ministry had released GH¢25 million to WAEC to help facilitate the examination process.

In an official statement issued on December 25, 2024, WAEC confirmed receiving the GH¢35 million cheque, which will enable the completion of the scanning process for the WASSCE results. The statement, signed by WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, assured stakeholders that efforts are underway to ensure the results are finalized and released by the end of December 2024.

WAEC also appealed to the Ministry of Education to release the remaining GH¢58 million balance. This outstanding amount is crucial for the Council to settle payments owed to exam supervisors, invigilators, script checkers, suppliers of examination materials, and to meet other financial obligations associated with the examination process.

Despite the financial challenges, WAEC has assured stakeholders of its commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities and expressed gratitude for their continued support and understanding. The Council reiterated that the timely processing and release of the results remain a priority.

Earlier in December, WAEC had made it clear that it was awaiting additional funds from the Ministry of Education, which were necessary for the repair of scanners required for the scanning process of the objective answer sheets. WAEC had stated that although it had several scanners, a lack of funds for repairs had resulted in delays in the scanning process, which in turn affected the overall progress of result processing.

In an interview, John Kapi explained that the breakdown of scanners due to insufficient funds had caused the delays in scanning the objective answer sheets. WAEC had also appealed to examination officials, suppliers, and the general public for patience as they awaited the necessary funding to address the issues. The Council assured that payments for services rendered would be made once the Ministry of Education releases the remaining funds.

WAEC also cautioned the public against circulating false information about the release dates of the results, which had been circulating on social media. The Council clarified that the results would be made available once the scanning process and other post-examination activities were completed. It urged everyone to be patient, emphasizing that the results would be released as soon as all outstanding tasks had been resolved.

The 2024 WASSCE for School Candidates officially commenced on August 5, 2024, and concluded on September 20, 2024. Following the end of the examination period, the marking of the papers began on November 7, 2024, and concluded on November 29, 2024. The scanning of the objective answer sheets, initially scheduled to take place throughout November, was delayed due to the malfunctioning of some of the scanning equipment, which required repairs. Despite these setbacks, WAEC has assured all stakeholders that the process is ongoing and that the results will be released as soon as possible.

A total of 460,611 candidates participated in the 2024 WASSCE-SC. WAEC has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the successful completion of the examination process and delivering accurate and timely results for all candidates. The Council has thanked all stakeholders for their patience and support throughout the process and promised to continue working hard to meet the expectations of the public and the candidates.
